'58/'59 JD 95 combine gear issues

I have a (either '58 or '59) John Deere 95 round back. I got this combine a couple years ago, it had been sitting for a long long time in a shed, I got it going and I have used it to harvest wheat the last 2 years. I'll be honest, I don't know much about any of this, I only just started farming a couple years ago and I'm new to combines. Both times I cut with this combine I had some friends around (long time farmers), they told me to slow the combine (drive speed) down, but I could not slow it down because I was already in 1st gear with the variable speed slowed as much as it could go. They said it seemed really fast to them for 1st gear which I agreed but it still seemed to cut good. The more I got to messing with the combine the more I realize that something is goofy with the transmission. It's like it's stuck in a higher gear, I can shift it into the other gears and it still runs the same speed although reverse works like it should.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong and what kind of a job am I looking at?

Thanks

Here are a couple videos of my combine, the first video is after I got it all cleaned up and painted, the second is last years wheat harvest

I don?t know the exact engineering of a JD combine of that era, we ran IH. I do believe as a whole
during those years the configurations of most all machines were fairly identical. Engine up top
behind the grain bin, belts bringing the power down to the transmission between the drive wheels.
So to shift the transmission long rods and linkage were use to transfer motion from the gearshift to
the trans. I don?t know about the JD but the IH?s we had...101, 403, 715... all had three speeds.
One rod would move to shift 1st and reverse, the other to shift 2nd and 3rd. Now the JD may have
a 4speed trans. This would require 3 linkage rods, where reverse is the only gear shifted by one of
the rods. So what I am essentially saying is have someone move the gearshift through all of those the gears positions while you watch
the rods to see if they are ALL moving. If they are not then likely there is something not working
right in the gearshift mechanism at the operators station.

Had a '59 JD model 95 many years ago. In first gear, with variable speed at the slowest it should just creep along. Yes, you must have a tranny problem. Have owned model 55s and 95s and never ever had a transmission problem.

I had a 105. It’s been awhile since I had it but if I remember right there were to shift rods that went into the side of,the transmission. These rods slid in and out of the transmission case to shift gears. Follow the linkage down from the operator platform and check for linkage being stuck or disconnected. If everything moves OK, familiarize yourself with what shift rod does what when it is shifted into any particular gear and go from there. It just involves some detective work. I have a hunch those rods aren’t moving right and everything is OK in the transmission. I’m sure you checked to be sure there is oil in the transmission.
