Farmall 560 deisel not opening NH 847 baler past 1/2 way...

Recently, we tried to test our New Holland 847 Baler, but got no luck with getting the rear end, where the bale comes out to open past half way. I decided to drain and replace all 16 gallons of the hydraulic fluid, and it still got half way, stuttered, and stopped going up. The original hydraulic oil was a golden color, and looked like it was watered down, to a milk like consistency. If you do need any photos of the tractor or the baler, please let me know, and I will post them tomorrow, around noon.

Thank you,

I'd switch hoses on the hydraulics to the baler or go to anther set of outlets the quick disconnect on the return may not be staying open.Is the pump whining when the door stops going up?

Tractor doesn?t have enough hydraulics to run the baler ran into the same thing trying to use an 851 on a Ford 5000 just wouldn?t do it wouldn?t lift my 15 foot disk either until I found a 4 inch bore cylinder

VS is correct. 1500 psi on a new 560 less on one 60 yrs old. A larger diameter cylinder on the gate (20% diameter) might do it. Jim

it does make a silent whining noise when it stops lifting. it can be heard over the engine, so it has to be a bit loud. the original owner ran a 851 baler fine, so it should run a 847 the same as the 851. when it hesitates to lift, and I open the throttle, I can squeeze a few more inches up until it stops. the system requires 16 gallons of hydraulic fluid, I only had 15 on hand... could the difference be causing it??? Any thoughts???

Thanks,

I'd think the 560 would lift the gate on an 847 its not very heavy,I've used my IH 464 on an 847 with no problems with the hydraulics.Tractor didn't really have enough power to pull the baler but the hydraulics worked fine.Bale with the 851 balers all the time with both my Oliver 1550 tractors they are about the size of the 560 and they operate and handle the balers fine.

If it ran the 851 it shouldn't have any problem with the 847 as the door on the 847 is lighter than the 851.I still think you're getting a blockage somewhere in the hydraulic lines which is common with the quick disconnects and maybe the quick disconnects on your tractor are not compatable with the ones on the baler or one set is worn. One gallon of oil isn't going to matter.

No, the fittings where the baler hoses hook to the tractor may not be pushing back inside correctly to let the flow of oil thru the quick disconnects if they block the oil the on the return the gate will be stopped from lifting.Check the brands of fittings on each end.Pioneer fittings are the most common but others can be used and not work with each other.

that 560 will lift that door no problem! i use my 660 all the time for baling on an 851. better check your hyd. filters.

when we bought the baler it has new hoses put on... do you think the quick connect adapter are not compatable??? there are different styles of quick connects??? maybe my female end is not compatable with the male end of the baler.

It means those tractors has weak hydraulic systems 50 years ago now they are less than weak you could Plumb a gauge in and check pressure my guess is your pressure is way low my ford did the same thing unfortunately on a baler you can?t easily just swap the cylinders out for a bigger set to get more force . The good news is a new pump is under 300$

If it will run an 851 it should run the 847 csn you post pics of you hydraulic ends on the baler and the tractor ? Another thing I have done is figure out which hose lifts the gate and take the tip off the other hose and see if it will lift the gate then put the other hose in a bucket

If it is a single acting cylinder, it may be leaking fluid past the main seal and getting bound up. I have a maure spreader end gate that has that problem. I have to pull the plug and drain non-hose end. Presto, fixed.

The baler operator's manual should list the minimum hydraulic pressure needed to operate the machine. It may be designed for more modern tractors with 2000 PSI or more hydraulics.

Old pulls his NH 850 with his S88 Oliver so an IH 560 shouldn't have any problem lifting the lighter door on an 847.Plus the poster stated the previous owner was baling with a
NH 851 hooked to the 560.

It sounds like he does not have enough hydraulic pressure rather than not enough flow rate.

If the problem was a restricted coupler or a restricted hose, the flow would be reduced so the door would raise slower, but would still raise all the way up. The maximum pressure would still be available at lower flow rates, especially as the system get close to stalling out.
