Goooood morning Im rebuilding an 6cylinder Diesel
engine debating between cotter keys or wire to lock
down nuts thanks

Not sure what you are debating, but for each way;

You either have bolts/studs that are drilled to utilize cotter pins and the appropriate nuts.

Or

You have nuts that are angle drilled to accommodate lock wire.

I could be wrong but I always thought that cotter keys were the square metal strip used to hold pullies and gears from turning on a shaft and cotter pins were used to keep nuts from unscrewing. Some engines used mechanics wire to keep the bearing nuts from loosening and others used cotter pins. Your repair manual should tell which ones to use.

The square metal piece use to keep the pulley from turning on the shaft is called a key, or key stock in long pieces. The half moon shaped piece is called a Woodruff Key.....
