Char Lynn aftermarket power steering

One of my goals this year is to get a Massey Harris 44 running. It has this aftermarket Char Lynn power steering unit on it.
I do not know if it leaks or even if it works, but I would like some information on it or a possible source of parts for it before the tractor is running.
Anybody know of a downloadable source of information for it? Perhaps Char Lynn still has something about it that they could part with? (Okay, that's a long shot)

Char-Lynn is now owned by Eaton Hydraulics.

If you GOOGLE Char-Lynn Torque Generator you should be able to pull up parts lists and service instructions.

("Torque Generator" is their official name.)

I had two tractors that had char-lynn units in them. They both started leaking badly, so I tried to put new O-rings in one of them. I made small file marks on the outside so I would not lose orientation. I had a bunch of different sized O-rings. Took it apart changed out the O-rings and put it back together. I did not get it back together correctly and it would not work correctly. The other tractor I just removed the unit from the steering shaft and replaced with the correct size steel rod. I had checked with a hydraulic shop previous to taking mine apart, they wanted nearly as much as a new one from Stieners to rebuild. That's why I attempted myself. Neither tractor has power steering now and I don't plan on adding it back. I don't know where I went wrong and will never find out. Sometimes this old dog just can't seem to learn a new trick. Good luck with your 44. gobble

I have never been into one of those steering motors but when I bought an eight year old DB Case 1490 from a dealer, the motor leaked so I got them to fix it. The service manager told me about what a big job it is to assemble one.

I have made this statement before and some questioned it but in my opinion 3 out of 4 laymen that try that repair fail. I have watched it for years and see a lot of them brought into our shop in a pan or bag. Comment is always o I thought I could do it.. LOL

I don't have any parts break downs or service info, but as others said, they are very difficult to repair.

It will go back together many ways, but will only work when it's right.

I would not go into it unless it leaks. Even then if the leak is small, try some Lucas PS stop leak, I've seen it work well.

If you do have to go into it, don't go any deeper than necessary. Not much can be done other then seal replacement. If there is a mechanical problem, it's not likely repairable.

Yea, not sure if these came with the Char Lynn unit or if somebody had a kit where all parts were included.
I'm pretty sure it should clean up well and look good after there is some fresh paint on it.

They told me that the inner rotor had to go into a freezer and the outer housing into an oven before going together.

The only reason the repair was priced so high was because of the retail price. It was not based on the number of man hours it took to repair it. that was the feeling I got when talking to the shop owner about rebuilding it. of course that is just my opinion. gobble

Gambles, take a look at my reply to a previous thread concerning these PS units in the attached link. I have a link in that post that provides the company I received o-rings from to reseal the unit for my 48 M Farmall. The company provides a link to a breakdown for them. If you are ordering the parts from them just make sure you provide them the numbers off your unit. My post there covers my experience with the unit on my tractor. I would say mine has 50 or so hours on it since the reseal and no leakage at this point. Hope this helps..good luck

guess I am the 1/4 that got lucky. I read the book first. Indedexed the outer housing and inside also on disassembly. Used a early 50's buick pumpa although Char Lyn also used Stude pumps and Cads too.
