Follow up 8840 Swather question

One more question about these swathers, and thanks to the fellas that have replied to my earlier question.
Can/ could you swap the sickle cutting head off the tractor , and replace it with a new disc style cutting
head. Would this unit have enough power to drive a disc cutting head ? And would the head have to be less
width, say 10 feet ? I have seen you tubes of them with a 30 foot drapper head, and this got me to thinking.

Anything would be possible but in this case the results probably wouldn't be worth the effort and cost. The 8840 engine has less than 100hp and although this could easily be bumped up the hydrostat that drives the header can only deliver a max of about 60hp. To cover the width of the wheels you'd need to run at least a 12 foot mower. If you used a mower with no conditioner you might be able to get by but power delivery to the header would be the limiting factor and is something that would be costly and complicated to improve upon. The comparable vintage rotary header machine was the CaseIH 8850 / Hesston 8500 which had a 6BT engine, much larger header drive pump, and increased oil cooling capacity to be able to deliver enough power to the head.

The draper header that you mentioned requires relatively little power in spite of the large width, especially when compared to hay headers that are equipped with conditioners.

Draper headers do not take much power to run I ran a 30 foot with an old John Deere 2280 it would push that header through the grain 9 mph
