Having trouble with my 861 diesel. Starts rite up. And idles very well. Once I start giving in throttle it starts to miss very bad and smokes very bad. Cleaned and changed fuel filter. When I bring back to an idle she stalls out. Any idea?
 
Try it again with the pump two screw timing cover loose on the side, if it runs better WITH the fuel leak the pump needs service. Broken retainer ring is restricting/shutting off the return fuel flow which upsets the advance, and causes stalling. Don't keep running it much longer, or the retainer pins will shear off, wrecking the pump.
 
If it starts to run bad at 900-1000 rpm that sounds like an advance issue to me. The advance is run off of fuel pressure from the vein pump. A restriction in fuel flow will cause a drop in pressure not Allowing the advance to work. Check full flow at the pump inlet. If it is good it may be time for a reseal. Most of these pumps are getting some age on them and the flex ring will come apart. Just the nature of this beast. Al
 
I started it and ran it loosened the cover. Made a mess. Ran real good!! Tightened it back up and it still runs good.
