We want to replace our wooden tongue and groove porch floor It is rotted where water hits it. I want concrete the wife wants wood Neither of us want manmade material What should we use and how do keep wood from rotting.

You might consider tongue and groove fence pickets. The lengths of the boards is only 6' but they are pressure treated so they would last for you. If you didn't mind having a little gap between the boards where they are rounded you might use 5/4 decking boards. Either of which if you wait until the wood is dry it can be painted and should last a lifetime sealed with paint. It would last for more than a decade if you just left it raw wood.

Does your floor have to be crack-less, as in tongue-and-groove, or can it have spacings like a deck? The non-flush might give you more options. If you use treated tongue-and-groove be sure the wood is good dry before you put it down. I once nailed up some that had been rained on, and when it dried the tongues no longer reached the grooves. The reverse is true, too: leave some expansion room to avoid buckle.

Mahogany works but it may be thicker if you want to match up to any existing porch flooring. I had to notch every piece.

Although man made, they do make a Trex type tongue and groove product that you can paint like a standard porch floor or get it in a color you like.

How old are you 10 Deeres? You might be worrying about something that your grandkids should be able to handle.

google ipe. its costly but it is supposed last forever. It is a south american wood I think. I have installed it for customers. Looks good.

Trex porch floor is good stuff. I second that recommendation. Find someone on the Trex website that knows what they are doing!! Look under "search for contractor" on trex.com. Kevin in Central AL

If you hire a hack carpenter to
install ipe you will regret it for
a long time. Gotta know what you
are doing. If I didn't use Trex I
would use ipe or tigerwood.

Deck over paint is a horrible
product. It traps moisture and
rots wood from inside out and from
bottom. Never know you have an
issue until you fall through. I
have replaced many decks with this
and other such miracle products.

Exactly! I've seen lots of T&G Fir porch floors that are 60-80 years old.

Kind of like brushing a heavy coat of truck bed liner over a lot of rust?

If it was an outbuilding you could choose but since it's the house and your wife wants wood go back with the tongue and groove. You'll both be happier. Just keep it painted with a good oil base porch paint.

We put the composite boards on our open porch, it is expensive but looks very good , nothing to maintain and will last a very long time.

Trex is sold by Lowes and Home Depot. I refuse to buy any product or installed sold by a home "improvement" center in my home. There are much better composites out there. Azek for example. Sold by real lumber yards.
