Can anyone tell me about this John Deere 127 mower I bought today? And how to get the pto shaft freed up? I can't get it to slide. And the serial number is 003 is this one of the first ones produced?

03 is series # not serial #. I'd suggest to remove driveshaft from cutter & immerse it in some type of liquid such as diesel or water for a while. Then chain 1 end to an immovable object & other end to a towing vehicle then tug on it.

Jim ....... I would guess that Ser. No. means serial number ....... are you sure it means what you say, like
series 3?

I had one that looked like that. It's been so long ago I forgot the name for it. The reason I bought it was with the wheels where they were, I figured it'd go over my terraces nicely. It had a real low gear ratio and the blades were on a stump jumper and real short, running at a high speed. You can tell by the size of the gearbox it may have been 1:1. It mowed like a lawn mower as a result. Mine was a much later model.

Yes I'm fairly confident I'm correct. On older JD equipment no serial number was issued.

I have a Case very similar to that. Lots if 3 in 1 oil dripped down around shaft every day for a while will free it up. May have to tap with a hammer while pulling.

get the torch out with big rosebud and go to town on it. it will come out then wire brush the inner as best as you can, then once its cooled off, see if it slides easy, if not, get the angle grinder out and a flapper wheel and buff down the high spots.

Personally I think a couple of ideas are fine but I would do this. Carefully remove the whole PTO shaft from the mower. If you have something big enough to soak it in gasoline. Bet you most of the problem is rock hard grease maybe 35 or 40 years old. Give it a couple of days then do the tugging trick. If stuck with rust then phosphoric acid dissolve rust. You can also try rust removal with a kiddie pool and a battery charger. My bet is the gasoline.

Think Deere called them a Gyro-mower. Looks similar to the 6 ft Brillion rotary mowers everyone in our neighborhood had. The Brillion had couple features that made them popular, wheels could bolt on lift rockshaft in forward position like that Deere, or behind mower with tires behind mower or outside mower cut. Ours was always behind mower inside the cut area. Had mounts for 3x8 hyd cylinder, Dad added an adjustable heighth stop so you could lower to same level every time. The PTO shaft with only 2 universal joints really hammered on short turns. The right side unbolted and came off, Dad modified our's and the neighbor's so the diagonal side between right side and rear side came off, and we mowed hay with it, never plugged up like sickle mower! When chopping stalks or mowing hay I would make wide turns so the pto didn't hammer so bad.

I ended up getting the shaft apart I need to get some corn head grease for the gearbox yet as the seal leaks gear oil then I?ll give it a good workout thank you!
