F-250 Ford Transmission

I know there is a ton of knowledge and experience on this forum, need some of your advice.
I have an old 1995 F-250 Ford diesel pickup, in good condition, I drive it all over. My question
is this, I have 221,000 miles on it, done normal repairs, brakes, etc, and it runs good. Some
folks who have similar miles on one of these, say the big thing to worry about is the transmission,
which is an automatic. Guys say that is what might go out next and will be a bit spendy. Your
thoughts on this? I use it to pull a camper would not want the tranny going out while on the road.
Thanks.

If you are planning on keeping it,I would have the trans rebuilt or switched out for a reman and new converter installed. It will be alot cheaper to fix now. Basically replacing the clutches, seals, bushings and normal wear items. If you let it go until it self destructs and damages a bunch of hard parts or the case leaving no "core value",plus possibly leaving you on the side of the road with the camper hooked to it.

I agree. Has the transmission been serviced regularly?
I have an 06 F-250 that I do not do a lot of pulling with but the tranny gets serviced annually. Good money spent IMO.

have it serviced by a good transmission shop--I have mine serviced every 50--75K miles-They can tell a lot buy the condition of the fluid and filter. If your really concerned send an oil sample out for analysis, I do that regularly on my dozers.

torque converters were a weak link for heavy pulling. Rebuilding and putting in an extreme hd billeted converter seems to have fix it for the full time pullers.. they lock early, dont slip and dont heat up the fluid.

Thanks for the comments, all good, now just need to make a decision. Hope I can find someone honest to check out the transmission.

WOW, normal life of the E4OD behind a diesel was 150,000 miles. You are on borrowed time. Used to be 10-20-22 years ago when I hung out at Powerstroke.com then The Dieselstop.com the best transmission shop to rebuild E4OD's was Brian's Transmission Shop. Not the cheapest, just The Best!

I have the ZF-47-S5 in my '96 F-250, replaced the stock dual mass flywheel around 250,000 miles, now has 301,500 miles on it with absolutely no transmission problems. These old Ford's just don't wear out!

Put a Ford reman in mine 2 summers ago. I forget the minles but it was somewhere just under 200K. $1800 for the tranny and something like $500 for labor.

Good advice.

My '99 F250 was normal until I read this post. Now it's slipping or shifting to neutral after getting through the first few gears. Usually when it gets to highway speed, it starts slipping now. Of course, it does have 230K miles and looks to have had a rough life before my owning it. I'll have my mechanic look at it, but am expecting the worst. As for the engine--runs great. I've checked the trans fluid, looks red but not bright, pretty red. Doesn't smell burnt, either.
