Some donkeys/burros are good livestock protectors & some will kill calves. If I had a need livestock protection I'd choose an Anatolian or Akbash dog.

Donkeys do a fair job of protecting livestock but since most attacks occur at night and a donkey goes by sight they are only so effective.Livestock Guard Dogs like my Great Pyrenees
go by sight and smell and they are Nocturnal they are about the best protection there is for livestock.I have dogs with my goats and cows and rarely loose one to a predator.Plus the Great Pyrenees
are fierce fighters when protecting my goats, calves, chickens etc.

Good morning Traditional Farmer...
Neighbour had a calf being drug by a male Black Bear.Just at sun down....I called him and he asked if I had a 30-06...350 yards......

Only one problem with your pest control program - it requires someone present 24/7. LOL I have a raccoon problem with my sweet corn and would love to be shooting them but they know when you are sleeping.

And if you have several fields over a scattered area what then? I have several different fields I run cattle and goats close to 200 acres total with woods, hills.mountain etc.I'd be a busy boy trying to cover all that area with a rifle 24/7(LOL)

Use females only. We had a male & he was always biting & chasing the bull calves & steers. Last straw was when he tried to kill a bull calf. Donkey got a case of lead poisoning.

My pyrenees left no stone unturned -- no varments of any kind dared to set foot within a half mile of My place -- the cats - calfs - chickens - ect. had it made -- that dog loved kids too -- nobody dared to touch them kids -- but He barked all night -- only downfall- best thing He barked quite a distance away from the house -- he ate less than a donkey too !!

And goats and sheep. I had some bottom land I was newly leasing. lots of Coyotes. I dumped a Jack in there one afternoon and said if he is still kicking in the morning I'm going to turn the cows in there. He was and I did and never lost a calf.
