What a rain shower does for you

Busy getting crops in and had a half inch shower on Tuesday. I was a little frustrated at the delay but got thinking that the shower was a good thing. A lot of my ground is clay based and can be difficult to fit down. By the time the ground had dried to get out without compaction the soil was breaking apart nicely from the field cultivator and roller. I saved fuel from not needing another trip over the fields. The softened soil reduced wear on the FC teeth so money saved on putting off the change interval. Most importantly I saved time that was used to plant which is important as I am pretty much a one man show this spring.

I don't grow grain crops, just a good bit of hay. I try not to complain when it rains, not saying that anyone else is. Without rain we don't have much to harvest. It can make for some aggravation trying to get a dry window to plant or get some hay dry enough to bale. I have to tell myself to be glad we got it. I think things would be a lot worse without it. It is frustrating at times though. The seasons don't seem to line up with the calendar anymore, if we even have seasons. It seems like all we have are summer and winter here in Southwest MO.

You and I have a different a idea of a "shower" LOL! I would consider a 1/2" a soaker, 2 tenths to me is a shower, and that's pushing it. Stay safe this planting season!
