What type of gear oil for rear tine tiller?

Checked the gear box on my TroyBilt tiller and looked a little low. Also noticed some seepage around axle seals. Not terrible but noticable. So what weight of oil should I use 80-90? , 85-140? Also seen it mentioned I need to use synthetic because of bronze gears. Is this accurate? One more thing how close to the top should the oil be. Gear box is non-vented and I know oil needs expansion room.
Thanks,
Sod Buster

We've always used regular 80W-90 in our 70's-era Horses and never had a problem. On the older machines there's a check plug on the left side of the housing--a square-headed pipe plug that you pull out and then fill the machine (with it setting level) until the oil just starts to run out. Don't know about the newer ones.

SAE #140 or SAE #90 if used below 32 degrees, right from my manual. Bought mine new in 1986 with the 8hp Magnum Kohler. The dipstick for the tines has a breather in the center of the plug and the trans vents through the spring assembly the engine support rests on in front of the T handle that adjusted your handles from right to left, also right from the manual.

If it was mine I would top it off with
00grease. That's what Snapper went to.
Comes in a quart squeeze bottle and on the
shelf at any Snapper dealer.

About impossible to get seals to hold up on those. Especially the tine shaft ones ! I have seen on here many went to using John Deere corn Head grease in them.

If you have a Horse model, Napa sells Sta-Lube Hypoid- SAE 140 API/GL-4 which is safe for yellow metal. This is the same type of oil it left the factory with.

I thought you went with a different model, best to check the manual and see what it calls for.

If I remember right, TroyBilt called for SAE 80-90.

I use the thickest gear oil in gearboxes here in N. Tx. If I lived in Canada I would limit it to 90 max. rating.
