regulator vs cutout for a 9n Ford

I need to order a three brush generator rebuild kit. I see that the cutout must have been the original component, in the charging system, but I now have a regulator with this tractor. For twelve dollars I can replace the regulator and not have to worry about if the regulator is going to work. I have never had it running. Can I expect the regulator to work after a thirty year sleep?

Going back with a 3 brush, you would do better to go with an electronic cut out.

It's a simple diode inside the can, no moving parts, no contacts to arc.

A thirty+ year old cutout that was US made and is in good condition may very well be more dependable than a new 2018 cutout from "The Land of Almost Right", and if it costs $12 it's gonna be from that place!

BUT BOB, I do not have a cutout. Not even a thirty year old cut out. I have a regulator that is thirty years old. The question was, Can I expect this thirty year old regulator to work?

O.K., so I made a typo.

Same advice for your regulator, and YES, you DO have a cutout.

Your voltage regulator has a "cutout" inside, with added components for voltage and current regulation. (An additional "relay" and some resistors.)

When I bought old tractors to fix up, I never bought cutouts. I would just use the cutout function of a discarded regulator.

Regulators have a cut-out relay in them. That's what stops the reverse current when you shut off the engine or when the charging system current flow drops to zero amps. If it weren't for the reverse current relay also known as the cutout relay your battery would go dead when engine wasn't turnning the generator. Cutout relay means the relay opens and cuts out the generator when not charging.
Now that you have a 3 brush generator you shouldn't need a regulator. You adjust the current or output of the generator by moving the adjustable brush closer to the other brush.
