O/T Bird Feeder

We received a very nice and colorful bird feeder as a gift. It is blue in color. The problem is no matter what type of bird feed I put in it birds will not go near it. What can I do to solve the problem> Thanks in advance? J.

If it was me I would set it on a table out in the yard and then put a bunch of bird feed around it on the table it self. Plus have it full of feed. Sooner or latter the birds will eat the feed off the table and then move on to the feeder.

Where you have it? In the middle of the lawn or under a tree. In the middle of no where birds might not feel safe enough to visit that feeder being that visible, and no where to hide.

If under cover more, try finding something brighter in color(whites, reds, yellow....) and hang it near the feeder for a time. As they come to see what catches their eye they might find the feed.

Can't help you much more, I'm not a avid birder.

Hello J Schwieber,

I have one that if red, I posted a picture of mine on tool talk, and no takers either! Birds are crazy this year. Robin's are pecking at my doors and pooping at the same time. Some one posted about a cardinal doing the same thing. Responders had same story with different birds. Something in the air this year all over the U.S.A.!!!!

I had a wooden bird feeder for over 20 years, I would repaint it every 7 years or so. Put a mix of 2 parts black sunflower seeds to 1 part regular bird seed, lots of birds, all kinds. The feeder finally rotted away a couple of years ago, keep meaning to make a replacement. So without a feeder, I have been pouring a line of the mix in a little space under the trees where I can see it from the house. Lots of birds, chipmunks and a few squirrels come every day, I also have a couple of water dishes for them. They seem happy, I may not hurry to build a replacement feeder.
