Case traction engine

Hemmings Motor News has an article about a guy recreating a 1904 150hp Case traction engine, the largest road locomotive of its time. No mention of when or where it is to be fired up or displayed.

With 100+ years of improved technology (for instance in steel) I wonder how much better a new one might be than an original. And how many hours did the open drive gears last with field work?

sounds like a wild story is it a locomotive or a steam engine used on farms you talk about both and to build a new one today is wild thinking be interesting to read the article

Those engines were built to be used as road tractors ( locomotives) pulling heavy wagon trains of ore and such. If memory serves me, there were only a few built (5 or 6). I recall reading about them in " Full Steam Ahead, the story of the J I Case company". I believe that one rolled over coming out of a mine in Nevada or Arizona. None of the originals survive, but relics of one were found. The blueprints were in the Case company archives and are being used by the people attempting to recreate one.

The story is true. The Anderson family from Andover SD is creating a brand new Case 150 Road Locomotive from original blueprints. Hoping to have it operating at their show the weekend after Labor Day 2018.

Look up Horsch-Anderson seeding equipment or Horsch-Anderson LLC. I believe the steam engine project was started by Kevin Anderson and a lot of the castings were done by a foundry in Webster, SD.

what I have been told, they were never a production model, and only maybe 2 ever built. They did have some boilers built, but never the complete engine. It will be huge when done

I just read a lengthy article on the recreation and IIRC they said 9 had been built.

That is why so few were built, the gearing was a weak point and did not hold up.
