Cutout to Voltage Regulator wiring diagram

Hey Guys-I am deleting the cutout relay on my 1948 John Deere M and wanting to replace with a voltage regulator. It is a 6 volt all original. Does anyone have a conversion wiring diagram? I would greatly appreciate it.

why delete the cutout is simple if the gen is in shape and going to a regulator will not improve anything if the gen isn't up to par. The reg wont make it charge any more than the cut-out the gen is what does the charge

1) BAT terminal on VR wires to the LOAD (NOT Battery/Starter SUPPLY) side of Ammeter. That's the same place that BAT on a
Cutout Relay used to connect.

2) FLD terminal on VR wires to Gennys FLD post. The wire that used to go from gennys FLD up to the light switch is
disconnected.

3) ARM post on Genny wire to VR's GEN/ARM terminal.

If you have a 3 brush genny that's adjustable, I would set it to the max charge location.

I would be sure to Polarize the genny BEFORE start up just to be on the safe side.

The new 6 Volt Class A VR needs to be compatible with (if still original) your original POS grounded tractor

BOTH the Genny and VR need good case/frame grounds.

If I missed anything hopefully the other fine gents can add to this.

NOTE this is for a 3 terminal VR (BAT FLD GEN) if you have a 4 terminal (BAT LOAD FLD GEN) let me know

I'm ONLY answering the question you asked, NOT questioning your reasons or advantages or disadvantages.

This assumes the VR you have is compatible with your Genny ?????????????/

Thank you all very much. I guess I should have asked if I would even need to change over from a cutout to a VR. I read some on it and it appears the generator can overcharged the battery causing explosions if you did not switch over to low or high charging on the dash switch. It seems a cutout is built into a regulator. So my thoughts were to have a cutout with voltage control.

Very good policy.

You're most welcome James. Having been here over 20 years and thousdands of posts, Ive often observed people had answers they just HAVE to post, but its NOT an answer to the question lol Also they give opinions or raise issues NOT related to the post whatsoever.

If its a 4 post with the LOAD (L) terminal, you simply connect loads like Lights and Ignition there INSTEAD OF the Load side of the ammeter like on a 3 post VR.
