Had the cat replaced on my 96 dodge today

I had the catalytic converter replaced today on my 96 Dodge 3500 tractor hauler pickup. I knew the old cats have some value, so I told the shop counter guy I wanted my old one. He said it had blown the insides out, and not worth anything anymore. Is that possible? Probably not talking much money, but I would have added it to my other scrap. Even though it passed the smog test the previous day, is it possible it passed the test with no internals in the Cat. Anyway I now have a Cat with the correct numbers for my 8.0 Dodge I hope the state is happy now. All the after noon mowing was a wash, as all the money went towards the New Cat. Another hour mowing it will be paid off. Stan

The Walker exhaust catalog shows this converter to be a straight in-and-out unit that should allow you to view the contents of the converter by looking at both the inlet and the outlet pipe.
The guy should have gladly showed you the old converter for you to verify. I'm curious what he was hiding if the converter was truly blown out.....
Yes, it is possible to pass the exhaust test with a blown out converter, especially if the engine is in good shape, but your state doesn't care about that.
Perhaps I missed the details on your previous post, but how did the wrong converter get installed on your truck?

The converter on my truck was for a 5.9, not correct for a 8.0. It was on my truck for about the last 10 years when I bought it. Stan

I don't think you were told the truth, as there is no way it would have passed the tailpipe emission portion without a functioning converter. That it passed with a 5.9 converter is testament to the good condition of the engine. The real story is by law a shop has to retain removed converters for 30 days, with paperwork showing when and why it was removed, this is on the federal level, Kalifornistan may have other rules. Why he didn't just tell you that, I don't know. I have let pepole come back after the waiting period. Converters bring me about $20 a piece, could get more if I had more at once, but I avoid exhaust work like a plague.

I had one like yours that I picked up when I brought a tractor it was in his junk pile (his yard). Every converter buyer that stopped by for a couple years said it had no value till one day a buyer gave me $40 for it. You may get lucky and find a buyer I spec it has no are little value. It would fail here with out the converter in place I think it would pass a emission tail pipe test with out it. If it has value and if its broken up inside it kills the value, It also could cause performance issues and for sure down the road it would become a issue.

I worked a Dodge sometime back like yours the converter was rattling he called a year are so later wanting a price on a transmission. I asked had he replaced the converter he said NO guess what the converter finally came apart and stopped up the exhaust the trans was OK...

Original OEM converters intact have value for some reason aftermarket don't they may fetch $10...

My 96 with a gas 5.9 cat started rattling bad so I busted up the pieces inside and blew them out so as it didn't clog shut. Many cats are not worth much at all. I do not doubt that yours was not worth anything as it is just ceramic in those. The high dollar ones have platinum in them.

If you told him your story about how the truck passed the emissions test then he knew it is still a good catalytic converter. He probably resold it for use on another truck.

Doesn't every muffler shop have a shelf full of assorted old blown out cats to retrieve and show the customer when they ask?

99% of their customers would not know what theirs looks like inside or out.

I replaced a plugged cat from a 2001 Chevy v-6 s-10. Saved the old ones, a pre convertor and the main catalytic convertor. Took them to the salvage yard with some other stuff. Main catalytic convertor 45$, pre convertor 8$. He told me the newer ones do not have platinum in them so are not worth but about 3$. So I'm guessing that your oem convertor had platnium and the newer replacement did not. But I'd have still made him give it back to me. I saw the one poster said they must be held for 30 days. But he'd have had to show me why he had to hold it. But I'm a suspicious and untrusting person when dealing with matters such as this. gobble

A fresh oil change with filter, air filter and spark plugs the day before will help any engine pass a smog test when it would not have the day before.

Its part of the paper work that comes with a new converter 4 copy's.

1) return for warranty registration
2) customer copy
3) shop copy
4) to be kept with the converter for 30 days, Federal law for whats that's worth

I doubt anyone would ever show up to inspect the old converter.
