Char-Lynn Steering Valves

I have a 3 series Char-Lynn power steering valve mounted on my old MF tractor to replace the factory steering that was destroyed years before I got it. It has worked really well for a few years but now when I go to turn, sometimes it turns the wheels, sometimes it doesn't.
I have the valve off right now for some other maintenance on the tractor so I'd like to look into rebuilding it. What are some common things to go wrong with them and how are they to work on?
Also, can they be made to put out less volume per revolution?

Have you checked the internal seals on the cylinder?

More likely that is the problem than the valve.

Not much can be done to the valve other that fix external leaks. If you go into it, be very careful to put it back exactly as it came apart. It will go back clocked to many different positions, but will only work when in the correct position.

If the cylinder seals are bad, you might consider a larger diameter cylinder. That would slow the steering down.

I dont know what you have but Someone on here said about one type that you dont want to go in there. I am assuming its an orbital motor. someone on here might fix them.

I had considered larger cylinders to slow the steering down but hadn't considered that they may be the source of steering loss.......that is something I will look into. It is of less importance now that I have a new tractor with loader, the 202 will now mostly be used for it's backhoe so not as much steering required, I can work around it but would be nice if it worked properly.

FWIW, the steering valve version is called an "orbitrol".
