Tractor dies, then starts after it cools down

Massey 165 gasser starts and runs fine, then dies for no apparent reason. Let it sit for an half hour or so, and then it starts and runs fine. Cycle repeats. Any ideas?

maybe bad coil or vapor lock is the fuel line close to heat? does it have an extra fuel filter that is plugged ?

once it stalls , check for spark at distributer , need to know if its electrical or fuel problem. could be the coil. or plugged fuel filters, or restriction some place.

First of have you done any work to it since it has started doing this?? Trouble shoot it a b it.
#1 check that YOU HAVE A GOOD BLUE/white spark at the center wire of the cap and at all the plug wires that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more as soon as you can after it dies.
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes. And yes catch it to look for water/dirt etc. in it.
#3 when was the last time you serviced the air cleaner.?? If oil bath have you dumped the water/mud out and fill with fresh oil or if paper type replaced it

I have a spark-gap checker, [or old spark plug] with plug wire attached--clamp-ground this. test drive til it quits. QUICKLY put test wire in dist cap in place of a plug wire. can tell fire or fuel failure.

Does it quit in a split second like the key was turned off, does it steadily loose power over several minutes, or does it just get more and more erratic until it quits? Does pulling the choke help it keep on running?

Always, always check for spark First.
Verify that you are getting a bright bluish
white spark that will jump at least 5/16".
Requires NO tools to pull a plug wire and
check.
Only then move on to fuel.

Check for spark at plug as soon as the tractor dies. If no spark most likely a coil or condenser. If you have a spark than your have a fuel problem.

It sounds as if you have a bad coil. Run it until it quits and then place your hand on the coil to see if it very warm. If it is then the coil should be replaced. Some have suggested that it could be the condenser but in my experience when they quit the are done for good or if it is something intermittence with the condenser you will often have some backfire just before it quits completely.

Not a Massey but my Oliver HG dozer with a Hercules gas engine did that for over 10 years. If I started it cold - I could run it near a full
hour and then it would start sputtering and then die. Let it cool off and then I could use it again. In my case, the problem was the coil.
