Made the Big Jump

I finally did it, broke down and bought a big field cultivator. My concern now is if I have a tractor big enough to pull it as it can be as wide as 40 feet. My biggest tractor is just 170 HP but the seller, another farmer, told me that the amount of horses that it takes is reflective of the depth settings. Those of you who have big farms and know a lot about using this kind of tillage may have some suggestions for me.

Thanks for your time.

Big impact on required hp is type of shovel...2 inch spikes pull way easier than 4-6-7 inch sweeps. Rear duals are a must. MFWD even better. Here, on clay, 170 hp and 40 feet wide won"t go more than scratching deep. I pull 24 feet with sweeps, 4450 MFWD rated 135 hp, cranks 190. I wouldn"t want a 28 footer.

Aw, shucks, I guess you'll just have to add a bigger tractor to the fleet. Dear, dear. Such a terrible situation you find yourself in...

I think you will be using more horse than the 170. I pull 24 foot with 1466 about 135 HP. Deeper like about 4-5 inches in 4th low. Than second pass is about half as deep in 1st high. So about 4-5 MPH in 4th and about 5-5.5 in 1st. Makes a good load.

As the other posters have stated, you don't have enough power to do a good job. You do want to use sweeps and you need enough speed. Bought an old cultivator once and then worked on it to level it so it would do a good job over the entire width and then found the tractor too small so pulled some shanks and stubs off the outside of the frame to match it with the tractor. Did an excellent job afterwards and we wondered why we did not set it up like that sooner. With an older tractor you need 300 so it has an easy pull and you don't break anything on the inside of the tractor.

I ran a 240hp cat on a 32? field cultivator today. 40? is pretty big, but that?s what I wished I had in a few fields if I could pull it!

Wow, I thought I was being a Big Shot by graduating from my old 23hp 8N's to a 56hp JD5203 4wd last week.
