They just told on TV that there is 90 million dollars worth of seed burning and 100,000 in handling equipment

Oklahoma, saw some pics on the other farm site not good down that way.

I presume this would be livestock feed some day, if it weren't burning?

Don't know nothing about cotton or seed up here in MN, but feel for what your area is going through.

There used to be a huge cotton seed oil mill in West Monroe Louisiana right on the West Bank of the Ouachita river. It burned in 1979 or 1980. I lived about 3 blocks from it, it burned for several days and the east wall collapsed and a lot of the seed spilled into the river. It was a stinking mess for a while. They rebuilt it about half the original size, then when cotton went belly up they closed the mill and demolished it. There are condos on the site now.

For a time, cotton seed was hauled into NY and used here in cow feed. Not processed at all, just cotton seed (with some cotton still attached)

About ten years ago nutritionist were selling dairy farmers on the idea that cotton seed was necessary in the dairy rations. I thought it was too pricey and never feed it. I haven?t heard any mention of feeding cotton seed to milk cows now for quite a while.

In my trucking days I use to backhaul cottonseed to dairy farms in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Unload from a drybox with a skid loader. Barely made fuel money on those loads.

The large dairy(click below) was getting cotton seed just like you describe, back in '09 I recall filling a large paper coffee cup with it, as I had never seen it before. Quite the place and the article certainly was right, there are times you don't want to stand still around this place. Always stayed near the truck and one of the photos shows where the storage bins are,(sawdust pile) one was full of cotton seed. We used to haul bedding for calves and hay and straw to this farm, and haul out sweepings to one of the managers beef operations.

I can remember years ago feeding cotton seed to feeder cattle. Can't remember what for. Haven't heard about it for a while but I'm also not around cattle as much anymore.'

Years ago we fed cottonseed to the dairy cows. IIRC about 6-7 lbs/da. Good source of fiber, some energy and protein. At first I bought it in bags, but later it was included in the custom protein/mineral mix. It doesn"t flow well by itself in augers.

I work the annual Cotton harvest here and all of our Cotton seed goes to the Chandler AZ area to dairies there for feed. Truckers make a back haul of manure from the dairy to cover fuel for the backhaul. They are running live bottom trailers. And somedays they can work in a load of gin trash (cotton hulls, sticks and stems) that is used for tilling back into the fields or for range cattle feed.
