One day until official corn planting season

April 12th is official start of season, we should be seeing soil temps in the mid to upper 50s, it is 35 here, snow predicted for next Sunday.

Just curious as to who sets those dates? The universities, where they teach that global warming is real?

Here(western Colorado),april 15 is supposed to be the 'magic number' for planting corn.Only the best of the best actually get there. This year,it's been so cold,I expect that date may be delayed a week. Me,usually not till early May.However, one year,I was done April 13. Planted 80 acres in 3 days with a Farmall SuperM.I still don't know how that happened!

We always used to knock ourselves out to try to me done by May 10. I was done by May first one year, but anymore,I don't get excited about planting any before Mothers Day. I've had way too many poor stands from seed laying in cold wet ground or ground that gets crusted after it lays a long time. Get that ground temp up around 60-70 degrees,it'll pop right out of the ground in a few days.

Don't do much planting corn around here until around May 10th. Some years, May 10 th is a little early. Looks like this year might be one of them.

Every state is different but they have a begin and end date where crop insurance kicks in. If you plant before that date you are not covered if you have insurance.

The most even stands of corn I see are planted when it is warm enough to pop out of the ground in 5 days. Then it seems to pass up the early planted.

Yep,I've planted silage corn on a Friday around Memorial Day and could see it in rows from the road on Monday. Amazing how fast it pops up if conditions are right.

My grandfather used to say "as soon as you can't see any snow on Silver Star Mountain, then you can plant". Silver Star is a ~5000 foot tall mountain about 8 miles east of me.

Worked for him and I still follow that rule too.

we like to plant the dryland, early in Nebraska to have the corn done blooming before the terrible hot weather hits! Last year. mother nature thru us a curve ball!
