Ih 300 utility. Is it worth it

A buddy of mine is selling a 55-56 ih utility. It has the fast hitch a loader on it. Motor turns over but needs to be re wired. Needs tires and probably fluids and new hoses. Asking 1100 for it. Should I jump on it. Been sitting for a couple years but the motor turned over last summer.

All I can say is , it depends. Depends on , how bad the tires are? Worn down but hold air? Cracked and flat ?
Is the loader a trip bucket or a hydraulic tip ?
Gas or Diesel?
How much work do you have for this tractor?
Is this just a restoration project?
My advice would be price some of the parts you think you might need to replace, and think about can you do the repairs yourself, or will you need to hire repairs done. And only you will know if it is worth the price .

Tires, tires, tires, if they are poor it is not worth it. Loader is around a 500 value by itself or more if a nice one. Not a bad little tractor but if there is no power steering you will build up your arm muscles. Power steering failures are costly to repair. The rest is a good tractor if not all rusty and dented up. A Farmall would be better. The tire condition can be the most costly thing to fix but that tractor the tires are smaller. if you can get a history it may be a good deal.

For some sort of reference I saw an IH 350 Utility with fast hitch, gas, ran good, decent tires, looked pretty good sell at an auction about a month ago for $800.I have a real nice looking
IH 240 utility with fast hitch, power steering, brand new rear tires for sale at $900 no bites, probably going to part it out.Apparently those IH tractors aren't very good sellers.

It would depend on the loader and the tires. If they are good you cannot lose much even if you cannot get it running.

On top of what everyone else has said - having a loader means possible steering damage. If it has power steering maybe not so much. Without power steering they steer hard but with a loader you better have some big arms.

A loader and a tractor should be worth $1000.

If the tires are serviceable it should be worth more.

Running it should be worth $2500. Not running does cause one to pause, is something deeper wrong with it?

I have one like that I traded for last year. cleaned carb, replaced batt. came alive. runs real sweet. plus side, had real good rear tires. - side, hydraulic pump was removed when I got it, bad. gear missing. new ones are high-dollar, found a used one, not that good either. gonna try to make one out of the 2 I have, else part it out. not worth $1k part for $8-1200 tractor

It is a hydraulic bucket also the bucket is brand new so when they parked it I'm assuming the Hydraulics all worked otherwise why would you put a new bucket on it also they said the reason they parked it was that the carburetor backfired and caught on fire last time they tried starting it and since then they must have burnt some wires are burnt the points out because they haven't had any luck due to wiring issues

IMHO, if the engine is in good shape it could make a pretty decent yard/mower tractor if you pull off the loader and drain the ballast out of the rear tires. As a loader tractor it might be too small and long in the tooth by now. In the early 1970's an uncle traded one off a 350 with an IH pipe loader that was well used back then already, every lever, pedal and pivot wiggled, it was pretty much worn out. I hate to think what it could be like 45 years later.

Non running, needing rear tires and needing rewiring I'd consider it's only worth salvage value, maybe $400 for the tractor alone and maybe $250 for the loader if it's not too beat up. About half what he is asking. The loader might be hard to sell alone as there are not many 300, 350's left. Would the loader fit a 460 or 656 utility?

Where are you located at?

The real question is can you trust your buddy. How did it run before the fire. wiring is easy to fix. Does it have power steering. did all the hydraulics work okay what do you want with it. use it or re sale. IH tractor location is very important. some places they are very popular. I find they are a good little tractor but if you grew up with another brand you may not want that kind. if you look around you probably could find a set of good used tires from under 300. now you would be at 1400. another 100 for wiring, etc. that wouldn't be bad but also remember 3 pt hook ups are what most implements are so your fast hitch wouldn't do you much good but you can use the pto for a brush hog. They do make a 3pt hook up to fit the fast hitch but that's just more money. The loader can be a good asset but if it doesn't have power steering then you will have to use the arm strong power steering which can be difficult at times. In all it depends upon you. If you feel fine with the price then buy it. If your not sure then walk away.

probably the biggest failure on a 300/350 utility is the steering box. the loader would add more stress. check the box closely- the halves may shuck against each other, or the holes holding it to the frame can get egged out. if the steering pin on the one shaft inside is broken off, it will be hard to find a good used one.

I've decided to pass on this tractor. I did however order about 150$ worth of electrical parts for it. They are interchangeable with other tractors so I'm sure I'll get use out of them somewhere. All I really want it for is a good 3 point that I can pull a small plow, push snow and mow. (Hobby farm) I appreciate all your input on this. It helps incredibly when there's a group of people with such a wealth of knowledge. If anyone knows of anything available in Northern Wisconsin, let me know. I don't have much to spend at the moment but I'm still saving.
