To20 stuck in first gear

Hello. I am brand new to tractors and tractoring all together. I bought my first tractor, a harry ferguson to20. I believe from the serial number it's a 48 even though the seller it was a 53. Anyways, it starts right up and drives great. I've ordered several manuals for it and already found some parts I need. My main issue right now is that it is stuck in first gear. I read several forums and watched some videos on this issue. I figured it was gonna be some selectors bound up. I removed the gear box cover and the selectors were perfectly aligned. The oil is clean. No rust or anything weird in there. I can move each selector by hand except the reverse one. No sure where to look next or what to try. I'm trying everything to not split the tractor if possible. I'm not really sure what to look for. I've been told maybe try to spray cleaner and lubes all over everything and maybe that selector is just stuck??? I dont know. The shifter handle is not stuck, it can move into any gear except reverse bit like I said. Doesn't matter what gear the stick is in, the tyranny is always in first. I drove it about a mile like this. Any advise would be awesome and appreciated.

Also, if I select 4th gear and release the clutch the tractorndoesnt move at all and the engine dies

If the cover looks like the below picture's......consider removing the Gear Shift lever...then lift off the cover.

SOMETIMES you get lucky ...remove # 12 OIL FILLER BUNG ...insert pry bar and place offending rail back into neutral:

If you remove COVER.....watch that SPRINS as per picture do not JUMP UP and fall into Transmission...

So it does look exactly like that. I took the cover off and the selector furthest to the right, so 1st and 2nd gear, can slide forward and back effortlessly. The middle can wriggle forward and back maybe a quarter of an inch. Maybe even less. The furthest left, reversed and start, can push backwards to start the tractor but not forwards at all to go into reverse. So, how do I pry it? Forward and back? Do I just put the pry bar on the notch and just push it forward or back? How much pressure? I don't want to break it

Good day:

Any history of previous owners performing any repairs / work in Transmission?

I know FIRST and SECOND SHIFTER FORK, can pose a problem in the Ferguson Transmission. (I own a TEA-20 that had a bent FIRST and SECOND SHIFTER FORK). Take a look at the pictures and verify there are NO bent or cracked Shifter Forks, forks are in the proper location on the sliding coupling.

If all looks proper, I would drain the oil from the Transmission/Hydraulic/Differential sections and spray penetrating oil on everything in the transmission. I would remove the SPRINGS and DETENTS from the top of the Transmission case and fill bores with penetrating fluid.

With a pry bar start moving the gears / shafts and verify are the GEARS seized on the shafts? are the shifting rails seized in the bore of the transmission case? has someone assembled the Transmission incorrectly?

Found the problem. Busted 1st and 2nd shifter fork. It was laying on the bottom of the pan and I saw it after draining the oil. Honestly I think this fix is way beyond my capabilities. I dont even know where to start.

I have changed out several failed 1st and 2nd shifter forks:

Are you up to making an attempt to change out the 1st and 2nd shifter fork ?

Do you own or have some basic tools....wood blocking...over head hoist, or some means of lifting...floor jack..

Start a NEW TOPIC in the FEREGUSON SECTION, you shall receive great support. I have changed out several 1st and 2nd shifter forks on the Ferguson TEA-20....It's not that difficult, consider it an adventure you can add to your diary......:)

So I drained the oil and sure enough I found a surprise in the bottom of the pan. 1st and 2nd shifter fork! So I fished it out. No idea what to do from here. They dont make them. Even if they did I have no idea how to change it and even if I could what all is involved. Any ideas would be great. I found one on Ebay but like I said they don't make them so it's used. That seems like quite the gamble. So was buying an old tractor and I feel like I already lost pretty big. Any thoughts?

Which user/shop manual do you have? It looks pretty thorough. If I cam find a fork I think I'll try it.

"T020 1st and 2nd shifter fork replacement...how to?"

I have replaced several 1st and 2nd shifter forks and all were "USED"...

When I received the USED 1st and 2nd shifter forks I hung them with a piece of Mechanic wire, wrapped them with a 12 oz hammer, all RANG like a Church Bell...they were used...NO CRACKS:

Below info I located in "YT" Archives"

1st and 2nd shifter forks failure is usually rough handling that causes it. Is the Clutch dragging at all, as that will cause a load on the transmission. Is the Clutch pedal adjusted correctly, it should have 3/8" free play under the footrest to the top of the Pedal lever when hot.

You don't always need to strip down the Transmission to get it out, just depends on how much room there is. Remove steering box and split the tractor behind the Gearbox and remove the selector rail that the selector is attached.

There are Detents, Springs, and Pins to know about:

Well, you have a running tractor that moves under its own power--albeit slowly. Could be worse. And--although I don't know how to fix it--it can be fixed. Just try to keep the mile-long outings to a minimum while you get it figured out. This a hobby tractor or are you trying to work it?
