I was looking for a dump trailer . Boy they don't give them away , old or new .. anyway happen to come across this truck for a little cash .. about a third of a trailer ..
The truck is a 1952 Chevy 2 ton , it has a 6cyl. 261 engine in it. was told the hoist came off a "state truck " .. I have never seen anything like it !!
My Question : Does anyone knows how to check the hyd. oil for the hoist .... it looks to me the reserve is in the cyl. there is a plug near the top ...

THANKS for any advice you want to share ...... mark

i have a grain truck with that set up and i have to add oil at the top of cyl. there is a plug towards the top end. nice truck!

That was FIRST thing I did ... a 2 x 3 tubing 1/4 wall .. Goes between the frames ... main frame and box frame ..
Had a friend get killed , got between and the box came DOWN ...

THANKS ......... mark

THANKS for the come back .... I can add oil with the box UP ?? { I hope } ... Do you think it would Hyd oil ?? or 10/40 ??
I took the Grain sides off , going to make sides 2 feet tall to haul some rock and dirt ... It's not going to work to hard , kind of a " big boys toy " ...

THANKS again for come back ............. mark

Those hoists are nice, and way overkill for the use that one would get. They were all done that way back then. With that hoist making sure the truck is level, fore and aft,is important.Facing downhill is no big deal, but if you back it down a hill and dump it you will get a surprise. That gravity drop body won't drop. Those captive cam setups have a surprising amount of friction. You will learn to look for overhead obstructions in front of you before dumping downhill. You just have to be able to drive ahead to level ground to drop the body.

nice score mark, a couple of tips to keep the old girl dumping, at the back where your hing set up is (called tipping sil) make sure you grease those pins EVERY time you take her out to haul. if you forget to keep them greased and those pins sieze in the bushings, you will not believe the grief and aggravation to get them out and working again!! BTDT I do agree with grizz on upgrading the hold down bolts from 1/2" to at least 3/4" and I would double up on the front ones. make sure your close to level when lifting your box up, nothing more embarrassing than laying on your side when the box gets just about to the top  i'm pretty sure you can double your money if you ever want to sell it, that truck looks nice and straight, not all beat up. the previous owners looked after it.

Whole truck is very similar to my 1974 Bedford. It is Australian assembled Bedford, which was British version of Chev. Australian version were assembled with GM parts from all over the world (even had virtually free trade within an organisation like GM, way back then)

Even the hoist is virtually the same. On my truck there is no seperate hydraulic reservior. There is a filling hole in the top of the ram.

That is a St. Paul hoist. They were very common for highway trucks. They are very stable when dumping. Lots of farmers tried to use them for grain boxes but they didn't work well for that because the boxes are too long, which meant either not enough angle or not enough power to lift the load. For the size box you have it should work ok. Yes, the fill hole is the plug on top of the cylinder.

I doubt it is real picky about what kind of oil, anything light will do.

If there is a drain, might want to drain it and start with clean oil. It may have never been changed.

But there must be a fill level. If filled all the way up with the cyl extended, it will over flow or blow the reservoir when let down. If there is no dip stick or level line, I would only put enough oil in to raise it fully. Then leave the cap off when letting it down, just in case...

Does it have a 2 speed axle? I had a 1950 model Chev. dump with one. The tow speed worked off of vacuum. Dad told me not to leave it parked in high range because the truck would roll away, if the vacuum leaked off.

I have a rock wagon with the St.Paul hoist....but I took off the pump and run the cyl directly off the tractor. Also have a "spare" frame with a 5 yd box.

I like your truck, I have a 7x14 dump trailer that?s real handy that I haul gravel in and limbs, my trailer is a bumper pull and is a beast when loaded with 6-7 tons of rock, would rather have a dump truck at times

YES it has a 2 speed rearend .. it is geared so low I have NOT used it yet { of course all I have done is drive it home and moved it around here }
Get the wiring redone and give it a GOOD SERVICE job .. getting all the lights working so they will have NO reason to pull me over ..

THANKS for the advice ........... mark

the 261 is a great engine. Had one in my 1960 Chevy 2 ton. When it went bad I replaced it with a 283 with 327 heads. The V 8 didn't have the lugging power of the 6 cyl. It was about 5 miles per hour faster than the 6 on the highway but it would barely bring me up out of the pit with a load of crossties. Glad to get the 261 back in there.

had one years ago, never found a fill level. if it didn't go clear up we would add a quart and try it, then add another quart and try again. as said before if you get it over full it will puke it out.

Grew up with a truck just like that. Fond memories of driving it around the fields way before I was old enough to have a drivers license. It may of had a longer bed ? They also had a cattle rack which was an extension that sat on top of the bed sides. Could be the same truck if that one was in Ohio ?

Those are not fussy about oil. They just have a gear pump and a valve, you don't have to worry about oils attacking clutch facings or hydro parts.Any hydraulic oil is fine.Any seals and packings that give out won't be from the oils,it will be from age.I always checked mine with the hoist down, and pump oil in with a gooseneck from a hand pump.

I got this truck about 20 miles from home { central Iowa } It does have the stock rack too ,,,

THANKS ......... mark

Dutchman, my brother just bought a truck almost exactly like yours. I think his is a 1951 though. Same brand hoist, 5 window cab, and 2 speed rear. His is green.

Hopefully he will have it driving by the time the Mid-Iowa Case Collectors tour rolls around next year as we should be showing our equipment on that one.

Check under your seat as we found a 1945 quarter under his!

Yes.......be careful......way back in the day we lost a great stock car driver we competed against......Glenn Martin from Waterloo. Crushed by a box while working on the hoist.

Great looking old Chev......you will love the 261 6cyl.
