O.T. dish washer

I need some advice on a 'simple to operate', 'not fancy' dish washer. For my 92 year old mother.
She has a GE, which probably works correctly. However, it is too quiet and she opens the door (cancels start),
pushes buttons and it does not restart. I think it needs several minutes to get reset.. BUT, she is
determined that it is a bad one ! WHAT is a good brand ? (and noisy) haha

Put a timer on the top of the counter that runs for one cycle and dings, or turns on a siren. You could put a light on the front wired to the timer. (our new Bosch has a light that shines on the floor under the door and is red when running green when done. Jim

Thanks Jim, Wire in a light ! exactly what I have been thinking. wasn't sure what to connect it to... I will look for a LED light assy, with wires.

Some of the newer dish washers take forever to complete a cycle. I can see someone opening it up thinking that it must be over and done with the cycle. Our Bosch takes about one hour and 45 minutes. And it doesn't even have a heating element. Somehow it stores heat from the hot water and uses that to dry the load.

Check the manual, our Whirlpool dishwasher has a series of colored lights on the control panel for each step in the wash cycle. Maybe you could try to explain your mom to look at the lights and not to open it until the finished light is on? Our mom likes to leave her hearing aids out when she is alone.

If you are serious about replacing it, any ten year old builders grade dishwasher or a dishwasher with a dial timer will be plenty loud. They are cheap on Craig's List. The timer dial might be easier for your mom to see and understand than the small colored lights on the newer models.

Bosch is far and away the best domestic machine. It is the only one that I know of with a pump with a 20 year design instead of ten year.

It sounds to me like you need one with a light that indicates when it's done. They all try to make them as quiet as they can. This one shines a green light on the floor when it is done. https://9gag.com/gag/a9AwGEL/this-dishwasher-projects-a-green-light-onto-the-floor-when-the-dishes-are-done

A while back we replaced the dishwasher in our Florida condo. Since we don't spend a lot of time down there, we didn't go for top-of-the-line, just a reasonably priced Whirlpool with a plastic (rather than stainless steel) liner.

My wife spent January at the condo, and called to report the dishwasher wasn't drying the dishes. "Did you make sure you had it set right?" "Yes, I tried all the different buttons, nothing worked." I said I'd check it out when we went down together in March.

So, last week I ran a test with a few dishes. Hit the "options" button, which turned on "Heat Dry", "High Temp" and "Sani Rinse". I checked every so often to make sure it was heating in all cycles. The dishes all came out hot and dry. I then showed my wife how to tun on the heating options. "I did that," she said. "But then I turn on "One Hour Wash." Which turns OFF the heating options!

I was just happy I didn't have to swap out a dishwasher!

(quoted from post at 00:43:12 03/31/18) Where are Bosch appliances built?

Bosch is a huge global conglomerate headquartered in Germany, with manufacturing all over the world. I would guess that the machines are made in Germany but one would have to look at the packaging and label to see for sure.

Yes Crazy Horse, that's what she does. Cannot hear a 'running' noise, thinks it should be done. Opens the door ! cancels run mode !!

I thought the appliance division of GE was sold to the Chinese.....

Still, your advice to steer clear of them is probably spot on.

I recently bought and installed a Kitcheaid dishwasher. It is made in America and is all stainless steel. It gets dishes cleaner than any brand I have seen. It is pricey though!
