My farmall c is 6 volts. I understand that all 6 volts are positive ground. Looking today it's not hooked up that way. Positive goes straight to starter and starts fine. Leave it alone or switch it around like its suppose to be. Hooked up like it is has it hurt anything

It would have been positive ground originally.

If it's charging, it's up to you, leave it or switch it back. I would leave it.

If you switch it, you will need to polarize the generator before starting it.

If it has battery ignition, check the coil polarity. For positive ground, the - side of the coil goes to the ignition switch, the + terminal goes to the distributor. Just opposite if negative ground.

If magneto, no connection to the battery.

Leave it if it works. However, watch your amp gauge to be sure.It should read chg when running, dischg motor off, switch on. If it reads opposite,it's(the battery) backwards.

The simple electrical components do not care which way they are connected IF the generator is polarized when it is installed
that way. If the system is charging the battery it will be OK. The voltage at 2/3 throttle needs to be about 7 to 7.3 volts. if
the amp meter is reading charge to the right side of the gauge, the amp gauge has been wired to read correctly the way it is. The
ignition coil (if it is not a mag ignition) should be connected with its Neg terminal connected to the distributor, and the
Positive to the ignition switch. Jim
