Most expensive little part you ever bought

I just bought two springs 5 inch long by 3/4 from case $20.00+ apiece.. FOR A SPRING.. $40.00 some bucks out the door. Tried hardware springs just not up to the job..

Was looking back at all past expends wondered if this came close to being most expensive small part I had bought.. Nothing else has come to mind except maybe the feeder slide bearings on my 273 baler.. at $75.00 a piece..

Oil pressure sending unit for a C-IH combine...$160. Off the internet...$19.95, same part number and works fine. Solenoid for cab functions on a Case tractor...$157...NAPA, $38.

Two weeks ago I bought a new microprocessor (brains) for an Agco tractor.

It was about the size of a deck of playing cards. $1367.00

Had key stolen from a Ranger had to replace whole key switch polaris wanted $120 for the part, I found same switch on Amazon for $15. As far as springs go the ones on my REM vac are about the same size as yours maybe shorter and are that price also.

Had a friend tell me the most expensive little thing he ever bought was a bargain priced condom that leaked.

That’s called an oops! The funnel shaped headlight bulbs used in old tractors are spendy for what you get.

MSS3020, you got some great replies here. If you still have the 273, next time you need parts (if you are not broken down in the field), try Esch Hay Equipment in Gordonville, PA. You could have saved a lot of $$ on the feeder bearings...

Speaking of springs - I was gonna order a PowerTrol detent spring from Deere last night. It is a 3 1/2" long compression spring about an inch in diameter. They wanted 60 some dollars for it. I found one on eBay for about $12, shipping included. I was tempted to try to make one out of high tensile fence wire, and would have tried it if this one hadn't been available.

Yeah - the wedding ring tops every other little part I've bought. . .

I paid $65.00 for a starter solenoid from CNH so I could get a heavy duty one and it physically broke from the weight of the battery cable within a week.

I bought a power steering hose for my 2-135 White tractor. The hose was 1/2" at the biggest and about 24" long with metal ends and a bend on one of the ends. $150.00 and the dealer had it in stock. I didn't even complain as I headed out the door to fix it during the middle of wheat harvest. Bob

Sign on the gas station condom machine when I was in high school: "Bust one and win a baby!"

Been a few years back and the exact price escapes me, but I remember the sapphire wire guides for our wire EDM machine were a couple grand apiece and not much bigger than a BB with a little hole through them for the wire. Some models have diamond guides and I believe those are more yet. Can't vouch for the cost of a wedding ring, as I've never bought one and have no intention of doing so, but from the experience of several friends the cost of putting a ring ON her finger pales in comparison to the cost to get it back OFF!

biggest problem is motivation.
when i first moved down here 12 years ago i had a need for bearings and races and seals all the way around for a case 310c got a quote for 3200.00 from a local supplier here.
thought that was kinda high, so a fella i used to deal with back home give me a quote for 1800.00.
so afterwards i would check back with old suppliers
and usually come out ahead every time.
it is the mindset of the local suppliers that cause the high prices, and as a purchaser if you go along with them then you become part of the problem sorry to say.

I put new ones on my 273. Got them from a bearing supplier. They're standard cam follower bearings. I measured them and found the size in an online catalog to get the numbers. I think they were about $12 each. The only time I get bearings from a dealer is for a specialty item and they're cheaper that way. Hex bore bearing for my 1207 MoCo and for the roller on a Mott mower. Both would have been special order, expensive and long lead time.

That would be the plug for my wife's "atrial septal defect", or a hole in her heart.

Never knew it was there until a Dr listened to her heart at age 55.

I don't remember what the part cost, best I recall it was in the $15,000 range. A little stainless wire mesh flower petal looking thing that they collapsed and fished in with a catheter.

Insurance paid most of it, still cost me around $3000.

C'mon Tim, be a man. Suck it up and buy a ring, get married, and go broke and eventually be back where you started (but without any money in your jeans). Don't be such a wussy !!!!

Boiler blowdown valve for a Candu reactor boiler . The original was an ordinary 1/2” ASCO 48VDC solenoid air valve for under $100 . The replacement was “nuclear “ rated and looked similar except it was military, had a different manufacture’s name and was totally silent when it operated instead of making a distinct “click-thunk”. Probably rated for use on a submarine . New valve , I’m not saying exactly how much it cost or the name but it was approaching 5 figures. .

I was thinking tractor parts but they're cheap compared to my two hip joints (titanium) and the shoulder I just got. My Father in law had an Allcrop 60. He spent $400 on new canvasses and ended up selling it two years later for $200.

Much of that was probably the installation/labor? Just guessing.

Bob, it probably was. Think the whole thing was in the $40,000 range.

I could have probably done it with some Youtube instruction and someone to hold her still!

Hydraulic control segment for the Gleamer F3 combine, controls the header height. $2100. Little bit thicker than a deck of cards.

Think the wedding ring paid off more than it cost so far, but only been 19 years not sure when the warranty runs out.....

A distributor timing gear in a pony motor for a pre war D4 Cat dozer. slightly smaller than a quarter, it was a composite material and set me back $275 and that was in 1998 or 2000.

$98,600 for a defibrilator/pacemaker. About 1/2 the size of a pack of cigarettes. Good investment though.....so far!

Don't know if these were the most spendy parts, but I got them today. They are 5000 psi hoses. $328 for 2 hoses and 2 fittings.

mss3020,

Pound for dollar, the tags on a new vehicle in Minnesota. The tags weigh nearly nothing, but are based on the price paid. The tags on a truck easily reach into the hundreds; each year, the sticker weighs nearly nothing. Maybe a postage stamp.

Last chemo drug i was on was 23,000.00 a month for two treatments, good thing i have coverage.

That ring I bought my sweetheart 48 years ago. She still wears it with a smile though.

this was 20 years ago. a MAP sensor for a K car, a little plastic box with two hose fittings. $90.00, but it cured the problem.

Off this site...MF 1085 cylinder head studs $7.75 each, nuts10.25 each. I need 18 of each. The studs I can see but the nuts are a bit steep, although they have a shoulder on them. I haven't ordered them yet but will soon.

The best nut to use on the Perkins 318 head is the long/high nut. I use the long nuts from Lawson Products on the Super 90 studs to gain more threads un the nut end. If your engine already has studs they don't need replaced. Some Perkins did use bolts on that engine though. The original studs are not torque to yield like some engines have. Also the 8 studs on the injector side are shorter than the rest are.

I paid $6.00 for a tiny pin 1/2 the size of a kernal of corn . The pin is used in the transmission of a D-12 to keep the collars from rotating. I think I win the smallest part contest.

i replaced all hoses with fittings on my 1012 bale wagon last fall.. 7 hoses around 700 plus dollars.. but cheaper then ordering new from dealer.. not close to what you had to pay though..

If I recall...I paid $70 or so for an O-ring to fit the brake housing plate on a Formal H. Granted it was a large o-ring, but really????
