20.8 x 38 18.4 x 42 tire height

I got this real good set of 18.4x42 rear radial tractor tires. My tractor has 20.8 Rx38 on it now with duals. I know where I can find a set of step rims for the inside from 38 to 42. The 42in rims came off a CIH 7130. The man selling the rims said that he thought if I went to 18.4 Rx42 on the inside that my outside 20.8 Rx38 duals would still be the same height. Anyone know for sure before I go to all that trouble is that is correct? Goes on my IH 1486

Your 18.4 x 42 tires are the same height as the 20.8x 38 tires. I have dualed them many times that way.

20.8 OD will be the same height as the 18.4 OD of the next larger rim size. So 20.8 x 34 are the same height as 18.4 x 38s. Years ago you would see some dualed that way too.

He really needs to check the loaded radius. When we went from 20.8x38 Goodyear bias to Goodyear radials, and put the bias on the duals with the machine on hard surface the duals didn't even touch the ground and that is with the same BRAND tires let alone differing brands. Yes they might work, but will put excessive stress onto other components.

David I have a couple of sets of 20.8x 38 duals. Both 10 bolt and snap on hardware. It would just depend on how good of tires they want. I would have to check to give you exact tread depth/condition right now.

Live in Kentucky. The 20.8 x 38 inside tires are wore out that's why I am considering going with the 18.4 x 42. The 42's have about 80% tread and I got them real cheap. My out side 20.8 x 38 are about 80% also.
