Hello Forum Members,
This is my first post ever and my first tractor project. I recently purchased two Allis Chalmers G tractors. One is being converted to electric. I appreciate keeping things original, but I'm OK with this electric modification. I enjoy the sound of a diesel or gas engine, but I think it would also be nice to operate a battery powered tractor. I like the fact that old tractors are still around and regular people can work on them. Thanks to the members of this forum who share their knowledge and experience with others.
Please know that I am not a mechanic. When I'm not puttering around my small farm I'm probably installing and repairing surgical lasers to pay the bills.
I downloaded a copy of the G service manual and started cleaning things up. I really like looking into a 70 year old tractor and seeing gears that look brand new.
I'm hoping you can look at the following pictures and offer some advice.
The first picture shows a metal ring that I found in the bottom of the differential case. I thought it might be something to attract metal debris but it's not magnetic. Next thought was maybe this is part of a rubber seal. I don't see anything in the parts diagram that looks like this.
Second question is why would someone need to tack weld the main drive gear? I guess the obvious answer is to try and hold it in place. I'm thinking it didn't leave the factory like this. Does anyone have thoughts on why this is tack welded? If it's not right I would like to fix it.
Thanks,
John
