John Deere B No Spark

My tractor started stumbling. Points and rotor didn't look good. WICO C magneto. I installed new points, condenser, rotor and cap. Now, I have no spark at all. Double checked point gap. What could I have done wrong?

Points often have a plastic like film on the contact surfaces. A 340 grit paper dragged through the points will remove it. Other issues might be a shorted to ground wire from the coil to the points, or a shorted to ground condenser lead. Jim

clean the points -- drag a piece of white paper through the points at least ten times to clean them -- they have to be clean to make contact - good luck -- Roy

I always take the flap off the box the points came in and use it to clean the points. Fold it in half so the brown side is out and then run it threw the point.

My experience has ALWAYS been a problem of moisture inside the Mag..even if you don't "see" any.

Take the Mag cap loose and let the Sun shine on it and into the Mag a few minutes and she will fire up..

This is experience from as far back as 1955 when we used our 2 Late Styled JD "B" tractors mercilessly..day and night..

Starting them in the early, Wet of a heavy Morning (4:00Am) Dew and all they would do is Crank many times, then Backfire so loud, lights would come on in
homes 1/2 mine away..open the Mag and wait for some Sunshine and away we went..

I agree, running a credit card or Dollar Bill thru the points would be worth doing once the Mag is open..

Thanks for help. I tried cardboard and white paper. No help. Took points out and cleaned with gasoline, dried good. No spark when plug wire end is held close to brass pressure relief and crank. Wire from the condenser and the wire next to it look good and clear of case. I've put points in vehicles all the way back to 1958, starting with my 51 Ford. Unfortunately, my 99 year old mechanic uncle died this year. He's the one who was a tank mechanic with Patton, God bless him.
