I want to remove the tappet train on my 414 and a couple questions..I am sure the bolts holding the unit to the head are head bolts and wonder if I loosen them do I need to remove head and install a new gasket or just install the renewed tappet train and re torque to specs or? If so any particular steps to take when doing this procedure is invited..Thanks

Not a flame. Tappets are located in the block and are not removable unless the cam is removed. they are mushroom tappets that do not fit upwards. If you mean the rocker arms rocker shaft and pushrods, just take them off. The two end studs are not head bolts they just hold the rocker shaft supports. The center one is a head bolt (long) but wont affect the head gasket in my opinion. Jim

But anything you take off of a valve train, mark it so it can go back where it came from.

1. You might take a minute to tell us what a "414" is, GUESSING a Binder, but mite no be obvious to everyone.

2. You might want to tell us what a "tappet train" is.

3. You might want to tell us WHY you feel it's necessary to remove the "tappet train".

Sorry Bob 414 meansIH B414 tractor.Tappet train can be calledrocker arm assembly.probably maybe better..I want to remove the assembly because when I checked valve clearance I noticed an awful lot of clearance in the rear rocker arm...Some of these names come from the repair manual I have on hand..Thanks

AH, makes sense, a B-414 TRACTOR vs. an IH "414" diesel engine!

I have a "424", your tractor's older brother.

What's yours have, a gas engine or a diesel?

ENNYWHO, typically having too LITTLE valve-to rocker arm gap would be more common than too much.

My first GUESS as to why you are seeing too much gap would be a bent pushrod.

The more dramatic (and COSTLY) version of this would be if the cam and tappet are eating each other for lunch!

Bent pushrods are uncommon. I would suspect the camshaft like what was already posted. The tappets come out the top after removing the head.
