I just bought my 1st old ford was told it was a 1953 8n after going over the tractor and checking my serial number I'm so confused is it a 1953 serial seems to only be 4 numbers please help any info will help

If it really is an 8n the serial number would start with 8n and be followed by a rather large number as many of them were produced. They were made from late 1947 until late 1952, so if you have a 1953 Ford it would be the NAA, which for 1953 was known as the Jubilee. Quite a different tractor from an 8n as it had an ohv motor, live hydraulics, and a lot more power.

8N has a flat head engine. The serial number is about center of the block just under the head. They have a 4 speed transmission.

In 1953 the Jubilee came out and was valve in head engine and a 4 speed.

The 1948 to early 50 8N had a 4 nipple front mounted distributor and the late 50 to 1952 had a side mount 5 nipple distributor cap

Here is a pic of the serial number this is a side mount distributer with s left hand generator is this a rebuilt tractor or am I just reading the numbers wrong

One thing to keep in mind with the N-series Fords is that the engine block with the tractor's serial number may or may not be original to the rest of the tractor. If your tractor's block was replaced at some point in the past the serial number you have won't mean anything when it comes to dating the whole tractor.
