Suggestions on buying new barbaque grill

Need a new one and not really an elaborate set up. My issues has been the plates/grates and burner rust out. Parts are high if available. Yes it sets outdoor but does get a cover on it in the off season. Any suggestions on brands or when to (or not to) buy? Just seems like thier a disposable item these days, would like to get quite a few years out of one. thanks

At the end of the BBQ season, I pressure wash the grill , burners etc and get everything as clean as possible. I light it up and get it good and hot and dry everything out. I sand and spray the burner cover plates with high heat paint, everything else gets sprayed with cooking oil. The grill plates go in a plastic bag. This takes a bit of time but I have found I can get six or seven seasons out of a grill rather than four or five..they will rust out eventually. I make my own burner covers from sheet metal I get at the welding shop, cut the correct length and width, I just have to mark and drill holes to correspond to the originals. I do try to make them last as long as possible.

We got a Char-Broil brand. Sold at Menard's and other places. It was cheap enough that I felt I could replace it in a few years and still be out less money than if I bought one of those fancy, high priced units. We probably do not use it as often as some folks would, but it is going on to its 5th or 6th season now with no issues other than needing to replace the AA battery in the igniter.

I have had a Weber Q table top gas grill for over 5 years. Very heavy grill surface; almost like a cast iron frying pan. When I bought it the price was the same at my local hardware store or a big box store. In Wisconsin. P.S. I sold propane 45 years ago so am partial to that type of grill. :)

I have had my Weber since 2010 and it mostly sits uncovered in the Houston rains and it is still going strong. Mine is the mid range line S series. In the stores they normally have just the grills with the cast iron enameled grates, but if you go online to weber you can find the models with the stainless steel grates and flame bars. The you can special order through your preferred dealer (mine came from Ace Hardware). When this one wears out I will most likely get another Weber with the stainless steel inside.

One note: my grill still has the burners parallel to there front, the newer ones have them perpendicular to the front. Not sure which way is better.

i have a char grill 5050. One side is gas and one side is charcoal and I also got the smoker box for it. Lowes or menaces have them for around 300. Have had mine for 8 years.

We bought a Ducane about 25 years ago and it's still going. They went out of business (built too well) and were absorbed by Weber but all they did was sell off the remaining parts. I just ordered new SS grills and brick rack last week but while searching for parts I saw that Lowe's is carrying Ducane grills. Can't say, though, if they are the same or someone just using right to the old name.

I have the cheaper char-broil now. Wife just had to have the one with the extra side burner feature. Well I think that got used 1 time ! I think it has to be as old as the garage which is 16 or 17 years now ? That is what made this one last longer than the others was storing it away in the garage. I have replaced the V shape deflector over the burners at least 2 x now. The grate was a coated steel rods and now it has rusted away in a few spots. I'm thinking about getting another one for this year instead of throwing more money at this one.

I would say go with a Weber....Have had our simple three burner unit for many years now, and the only replacement items have been the burner covers. Fires up all winter long, and never lets me down unless I don't keep the propane tank full. The grates are very heavy duty and will not rust away.

Get a lynx, brass burners and stainless steel grates, may be the last grill you ever buy, my brother has one.

I've been down that same road. Finally bought a Weber Q series. Best grill I've ever owned. This will be year seven and it sits out on a covered deck all year long. I have it hooked up to my house propane supply. Don't have to mess with 20 lb. tanks that way.

I used to spend WAY too much time on The Diesel Stop Ford diesel truck forum back when it was called Powerstroke.Com. They had an "All other topics" forum called The Bilge, and someone recommended a Weber Performer Grill, starts on LP for a couple minutes, when the charcoal gets burning you turn the gas off and cook with charcoal. We've had that thing 20 years! We use it year round, get a nice day in December or January we will cook burgers or brats on it. The automatic gas lighter still works first time every time. If it doesn't work, your out of LP gas. Much better taste than a gas grill, better than a charcoal grill you use lighter fluid on. Wife makes a smoked pork butt for BBQ pulled pork sandwiches that are beyond GREAT! We have an internal remote thermometer and timer for that, typically takes 10-12 hours to cook a medium sized butt. Wife worked with someone who had the same grill who raved about it too.

I worked for The Thermos Company back in the late 1980's, for 2-1/2 years, at their barbque grill plant. They made gas grills for dozens of retailers, Sears, CharmGlo, etc, etc. I bought one of their better grills already assembled, glass shelves, side burner, Burners rusted out in 3-4 years, ignitor never worked. We scrapped it after about 8-9 years. The Weber is Many times more grill than our other one was.

Weber!
My Weber kettle is 15yrs old and still going.
I have replaced the grill once and it's due
for a new one. I haven't given it the best
maintenance, but it's held up good.
I'd like the next bigger one but I can't do
it till this one wears out.

That'll be my next one. Have a Char-Griller straight charcoal with side box now. That thing has cooked
SO MANY meals for my little family and our friends. So much home grown beef and pork and sale price
chicken pieces. And sweetcorn. And stuffed peppers. And poatato packets. Even made black bean burgers
for my vegetarian brother and his family. So many bags of charcoal. I'll hate to see it go.

I've had a couple of gas grills over the years, after the last one gave out I said time for charcoal only! Bought a Master Forge charcoal only with cast iron grates, I've had it going on 8 years. It sits outside uncovered all the time, give it a wash and it still looks like new, I light the charcoal with a chimney, no lighter fluid. This thing will probably outlast me.

I use wood to barbecue-bought the link-log system-http://www.greenheatinc.com/link_log.html

Works great for me-high up front investment, but last forever.

I have a Holland gas grill. It is 16 years old and still working great. They DO NOT flare up and you cook by "time." In other words, the directions give you an idea of how long it will take per side, put the meat on the grill, close the lid and walk away..... Check it at the recommended intervals. The drip pan takes the grease to a small bucket. Best thing I ever bought. Not cheap, but dang good.

Hello jocco,

It's all about what you need or want. Burners is the weakest point. Cast iron ones are lifetime. Grates are next, cast iron are long lasting. Top is next ceramic coted should last while. Stainless cabinet would be also long lasting. So....My choice was a Weber Genesis. It does not have cast iron burners though, but all the rest.....

in 2006 I bought a cheap, natural gas one, off season, from Lowes. I had just built my detached garage, so when running the gas to it, I had the plumber tee it off at the grill location. That one lasted 10 years, replaced all internals once! Then in fall of 2016, I bought a Char-broil, infra red, from Menards. They sell the NG conversion for that brand, so kept my natural gas convenience! The infra red took quite awhile to get used too-600 degrees! It seers the outside quickly keeping everything extra moist! I got a remote read (I can see the temperature from my couch!)meat thermometer to keep me from making burnt offerings! It has an alarm too, in case the news is THAT interesting! LOVE it now that I'm getting used to it!

Weber, best build and material quality of any grill I have had. Cast aluminum base and burner mount that wont be rusted out in 2 years like all the sheet metal base grills I have owned. Real quality stainless steel burners and plumbing, very even heating. Wish I had looked at Weber 10 years ago.

I bought a Weber in the late fall 10 years ago. Good price during the year end sale. The only regret is I wished I?d bought it 20 years sooner. I use it year round.

3rd for Holland, mine is 12 now and aside from cleaning the rust scale from the cast iron burner it shows no signs of rusting out.

I wasn?t real thrilled about the Holland I had ready to junk it go with something else might of just got a bad one wasn?t getting enough heat out of it and after messing with the company for a while I drilled out the orface and then it did a better job
