OT--How soon they forget

Just heard on the radio that our government is considering staying on daylight savings time year-round.
If I remember correctly, they did that back in the seventies and because of the deaths of school children standing on side of road, waiting on bus, in the dark--they decided it was a bad idea.
Correct me if I am wrong.

I remember the year we stayed on DST.

And there was a concern for children having to go to school before daylight.

I don't remember any deaths though, but been a long time...

Seems there were other reasons too, like it wasn't very effective at saving energy, which was the reason behind the keeping it year round.

Even with daylight/standard time, we still had to stand by the road IN THE DARK for two months out of the year. From about mid-November to about mid-January, it would be black as night when the bus came to pick us up.

Just leave it alone. People will adjust to
whatever time works for them.

Grew up 2 miles from a time zone line.
Everybody did things at the same time, the
clocks were just different depending what
side of the line you were on.

I'm fine with it if they do it nationwide, but there have been attempts to just stay on one or the other statewide. There are just way too many problems that I can see with being out of synch with the rest of the country for just part of the year.

As a high school student back then I remember..... The idea was to see if it would save any energy. It did but not enough to make it worth while. Most didn't like it. I loved it. I didn't care about going to school in the dark, but really liked the extra light after school.

I don't remember any extra deaths. We was going in the dark anyway for most of the winter. I do remember a few deaths due to fog though.

Big reason they didn't change way back then was voters. They didn't want to make the voters angry.

I wish we'd pick one a stay with it.

The only thing it did was make it so if we broke down in afternoon-evening when the best time was for field work the stores were already closed when we need to get that part. The only ones to benifit are the golf courses with longer playing hourse in evening. And it put the drive in movie theaters out of bussines.

Just like a lot of wrong things government want to do, they do it "for the kids" so there is less resistance. What about all the other accidents both on the road and at work when peoples sleep is disturbed. IMHO they do it anymore to just get the people conditioned to obeying stupid orders "because the government says so". And if you are old enough to remember, our government WAS NOT sending planes over Russia, then Francis Gary Power was shot down, and our government WAS NOT sending troops over the border of Cambodia and Laos, but yet it WAS. Whose government was lying? I'll now sit back and wait for the black helicopters to come and get me.

Daylight savings time is like cutting a foot off one end of a blanket, sewing it on the other end, and thinking you have a longer blanket.

It accomplishes NOTHING. The number of daylight hours does not change. You can arrange your day's activities to match the daylight hours available without changing everyone else's clocks.

I really don't know what all the fuss
over the time changes is all about.
It's only an hour.
It seems people think their world is
coming to an end over it or worse, they
broke a fingernail.
Take a nap if you're tired.

But it doesn't make the blanket shorter either so if the day is the same why is everyone getting upset? Act like a bunch old milk cows anything changes from their regular routine and they go nuts.

Daylight saving used to be the ultimate political delusion - let them think that they really did control time.

Then along came "global warming"

Old fellow in the town where I grew up always complained about the time change for church services. Insisted that the
church should "stay on God's time".

They didn't go to DLS year round, but did extend it. You are correct about children being hit while waiting for
the bus. The gov. went back to the original schedule then, but it has been extended again since. I am not opposed
the the idea of DLS. I don't want daylight at at 4:30 AM in the summer, nor do I want darkness until after 8:00 AM
in the winter. I just feel it is 2 weeks too long at each end now.

A lady called into a local radio station after they had reminded everyone to set their
clocks back at the end of DSL. She told them that she sure was glad it was going back.
That extra hour of daylight was "Burning Up My Grass"

Since the obuma administration they are no longer allowed to use black helicopters as that is considered racist to the helicopters since they did not chose to be painted black

I agree with those that say split the difference and call it good ! I have always said to do this. It makes sense to me.

I sure wish it was permanent. I know rural people complained about morning darkness and their kids, but the answer should be to teach the kids to stay out of the road! I do not know of any deaths as a result, just a bunch of smoke with no fire as far as I know. If the kid is too young to stay out of traffic then he/she is too young to be out there alone regardless of the light level.

I would love to have it permanently.

Why not get rid of time zones entirely? Just use Coordinated Universal Time (GMT). Let the businesses, factories, schools, etc. change there shift/operating hours to what ever the choose. That would end all the confusion (except for those who believe God set time zones).

Funny everything I find on kids and death due to DST is all speculative. In other words someone said "in my study more children will die" and everyone believed it.

I wish they'd pick one or the other and leave it that way instead of changing it back and forth all the time.

The idea that you can't do something unless the clock reads a certain way is the height of stupidity!

(quoted from post at 15:08:20 03/07/18) I wish they'd change it 4 times a year instead of 2 times.

That's just sadistic. I think its not useful and just makes everyone have to adjust their body clocks unnecessarily. I prefer it to be light later in the evening. I have worked in Az and their staying on "winter" Daylight savings time is less than helpful. It gets light at 0430 and dark by 2030 in the middle of summer. Just awful get out of work and its dark before you have much time to get anything meaningful done.
