4430 Transmission trouble

4430 Driver

Hello,I am working on a 1974 JD 4430 with a quad range transmission. The tractor had a lubrication problem, ruined the transmission input shaft, pto input shaft (welded the pto clutch hub to the shaft), the two-speed was toast, clutch ruined while splitting tractor. Had a donor tractor, JD 4230 used the clutch operating valve assembly, transmission input shaft, clutch, two-speed and transmission top shaft(shift synchronizers where toast). Got everything cleaned up and assembled. Now the tractor runs faster than factory. Any help is greatly appreciated.

"Runs faster" how? Engine turns more RPMs? Tractor travels at a higher rate of speed?

If the tractor travels at a higher rate of speed, then the 4230 isn't geared the same as the 4430, probably due to differences in tire size, and your only options are to get the right parts for the tractor, or use the next lower gear.

Sorry about the confusion, the ground speed increased in all ranges. The two-speed planetary gears are the same, does that mean the transmission top shaft is the culprit?

Can?t imagine one shaft and its gears changing the speed. Different size and tooth count gears would not match with lower ...counter... shaft gears. Been a while since I worked on one of those. Just a shot in the dark, but I wonder if you can cross the linkage to the A-B and C-D ranges? Does it maybe go slower when the lever is shifted to the C D range?

not sure how they work, if they are hydrolic pressure driven somehow, could it be that something was slipping all the time before and now it is not??

Me either. I would think if gears are not correct the tractor would not move very far or shear teeth off. I first thought I missed a shift collar for the range gears, but the forks are in there slots. Just now thought of this what if the shifter fork is reversed, is that possible? As to speed the driver called me on his way to the hay field and asked what did I do to the tractor? I told him hopefully fixed it. He said he was passing cars, not letting them by. And that was in D4 with half throttle.

Has to be something with the two speed but I can't at the moment think of what it could be. I know the linkage to the two speed can be installed 180 degrees off but that would not give you over drive. Try posting over on the yt john deere page or on the facebook 30, 40, 50 series page.

I think the 4430 and 4230 two speeds are different, one is a step up and the other a step down. I think you put a step up in your 4430. This was common in Europe as they wanted faster road speeds.

I know there are overdrive and underdrive versions of the two speed used in different tractors. The 4230 and 4430 however used the same assembly originally. What you are describing sounds like someone put an overdrive unit in your parts tractor. There is really no other way to increase speed in all gears.

4440, 4450 and 4455 use the overdrive 2 speed because the changed the final drive ratio to reduce the stress on the trans and used the overdrive 2 speed to keep the ground speeds the same as the other tractors. All others used the underdrive one.

You can easily pull the clutch valve out and see whether it’s an under or over drive one by looking at the position of the larger planet gear, larger one towards the rear is an overdrive one.

The operating lever is flipped 180 degrees when comparing a 4430 to a 4440 because the clutch/brake functions are swapped.

It’s possible your parts machine had the overdrive gear set, it’s generally done when you want to go a bit faster. It’s commonly done by pullers to split the trans speeds a little faster, I have one setup that way, I run the same gear as the rest of the pack, but I’m about 28% faster gear wise. Makes road gear real fast, like close to 30mph at 2600 rpm.

If I'm not mistaken all of the 30 series where underdrive two-speeds. To make for sure I pulled the planet and sun gears out of each assembly(original two-speed planetary out of tractor and two-speed planetary out of the 4230) and counted to make for sure. I think I put the shifter fork for the range shifter (A-D) in wrong.
