Reasonable price for Ford 5600 4x4?

Hello,

I am new to this website and to buying tractors. I am searching for the right tractor for my farm which is in a hilly area, so, I have been looking for a 4x4 tractor approx. 40-60hp but
relatively affordable as I am starting out and on a budget.

I came across a 1981 Ford 5600 4x4 with 4,100 hours in my region via "yesterdays tractors" and they're asking $10,000. Is this a reasonable asking price? Are there any parts of this
tractor I should be extra careful to look at when I go to look at it? Anything else an experienced tractor driver could recommend?

Thanks in advance, and happy almost spring.

Those are hard to compare since there are so few and I think I found the one you are looking at. You might try searching the web and see if you can find any to compare. I have a 1995 model 5610 2wd that has been a good tractor and that's the only info I can give. The price seems ballpark to a little high if the condition is good. Always negotiate and they might knock off another thousand or so. Check the fluids for discoloration, steering tightness, brakes, pto, engine noise, hydraulics such as 3 pt. lift, auxiliary hydraulic hookup, 4wd, tires need to be good at that price, etc. Little stuff such as lights working, seat condition, steering wheel quality, etc. they should repair/replace at the negotiated price. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I have had a 1981 7600 4X4 about 25 years, very trouble free.

They don't make parts anymore for most of the 5600-6600-7600 FWD. In figuring the value of the tractor, consider that the failure of one part in the front axle may leave you with a two wheel drive tractor for a long time. Also be certain that the axle can be shifted in and out of gear, and that it actually drives when it's in gear.

If I remember correctly that axle was produced by ZF in Germany, and somewhere there must be a Ford to ZF part number cross. The mounts would be specific to Ford, but I would presume the internals would be generic ZF.

The 5600 series of Fords are very good machines.

The front wheel assist is a rather rare option, and parts are no longer available for that portion of the tractor. Be sure that it is working great, and that you understand why it is being sold. They are such handy tractors, people don't get rid of them until so,thing like this breaks......

Value is hard to figure out, that is probably a little high but a normal asking price. Depends on how bad you want it, and how bad they want to sell it, price could be a little lower.

For loader work a front wheel assist is great in that size tractor.

For use without a loader, hummm, a 2wd is cheaper, less maintenance, and generally has enough traction with good Ag tires on it? Just a thought.
