I saw this and thought of The Firewood King. I wanted Larry to post it but he said I should. Hope you all like it.

The Firewood Poem

"Beechwood fires are bright and clear
If the logs are kept a year,
Chestnut's only good they say,
If for logs 'tis laid away.
Make a fire of Elder tree,
Death within your house will be;
But ash new or ash old,
Is fit for a queen with crown of gold"

"Birch and fir logs burn too fast
Blaze up bright and do not last,
it is by the Irish said
Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread.
Elm wood burns like churchyard mould,
E'en the very flames are cold
But ash green or ash brown
Is fit for a queen with golden crown."

Poplar gives a bitter smoke,
Fills your eyes and makes you choke,
Apple wood will scent your room
Pear wood smells like flowers in bloom
Oaken logs, if dry and old
keep away the winter's cold
But ash wet or ash dry
a king shall warm his slippers by."

About the poem

Now we will see if the Wood King agrees with the author of the poem! Thanks,,its a great poem,,and it had to be sent by a fellow New Yorker!

Don't see any mention of hickory. I think it's about the best.

We it all works for me.I try to burn pines when in fall or spring. When I don't need a lot of lasting heat. Box elder is fine if it is dry burns hot. Beach makes great finishing wood for syrup in the pan. Long poles of ash or oak will make it boil the length of the pan. Hickory is good if it is dry. Elm has to be taken out to pea then put back in.

And then there is Basswood, butternut, and willow. The first two help fill a pile, and willow isn't even worth cutting. Basswood and butternut makes some really nice decorative lumber though.

I have over 30 oak species on the place, so all I burn is oak. They burn clean and hot, but I was surprised that Mesquite was not mentioned for BTU output. By far the hottest fire I've ever set beside....

Density (Weight) of the wood determines it's BTU value.

Hickory is one of the heaviest woods....gtractorfan, you've got a big load there for the little trailer.

Reminds me of what the old farmer told his wife when, after drinking too much, he called to tell her he'd be late.

"Don't chop any wood Ma, I'm comin' home with a load"
