Dad bought the 4020 new. It was sold then I bought it back a few years ago. The 35 chopper came from an estate sale and had never been used enough to have the knives sharpened. The 122 came from a shed in central IL. The good stuff is getting much harder to find. Tom

Yes, it is getting harder to find but still there are gems out there waiting to come out of the shed after 20, 30, 40, years or more. I just hope that I get on firm financial ground soon to buy my share of it before it is truly gone. Like what was just said on the IH Red Power board the best and most economical to buy it at auctions or consignment sales. Just a couple of years ago there was a 14T baler that looked like it was used for one season and stored away until the auction. A bunch of years ago there was an Oliver 83 corn picker that looked like it had been never used and it brought 600 dollars. Patience is not a virtue with me but for now I am going to have to bide my time.

My renter chopping corn in the snow several falls ago with his old 5460. Last summer he updated to a much larger unit and did a lot of custom chopping last fall.

I spent a lot of hours dragging these around as a kid...there was a lot of satisfaction clearing off a field at the end of the season...the old Allis feeder wagon got double duty, we chopped in it for the pile, then it all got loaded back into it for feeding in the winter and spring. I would hate to guess how many tons of silage that poor old wagon has spit out the front...

Eldon that first chopper looks like a Gehl. We had one like it for a few years. In the last few years we had it I pitched round bales into it by hand to grind hay for the stock cows. I figured I had more muscle than money in those days so I did it that way instead of hiring a tub grinder. I quartered the bales with a chain saw and then pitched away. The chain saw worked OK in alfalfa, not so good in grass hay. It was a good way to warm up on a cold winter day.

Yes it is a Gehl, we bought it after the AC's and a MF that we had. It was the best of the bunch, we pulled it behind a JD 720 diesel and then an 1850 Oliver. My brothers now chop with New Holland. Here is a pic of my Fox which is the same as the MF we had. We tore up the MF with our WD45 diesel...the sickle drive was a weak point on them. None of them liked foxtail LOL!

As long as everybody is chopping today, I'll share a pic too. This is from 2006- Gehl 1285 chopper equipped with a 3PN NH head.

I could not find any showing the chopper. I did find some pictures of me hauling in silage with some "help". LOL

Hi Tom. Nice pics of your chopping equipment. These bring back some memories for me over 30 years ago. Back in the late 80's, I used to help a dairy farmer neighbor chop corn silage with a JD 4250 MFWD. I enjoyed chopping corn silage alot. Thank you for sharing these with us sir.

This JD 64 has been hiding in one of the sheds for a few years. I had it out to do move some stuff around and back in it went.

Here is picture of the chopper we used from 1975 until 2016, a 1970 vintage NH 880. Used until two years ago when it had a major malfunction. Using a NH 900 now but have the parts to return the 880 to service. I like using the 880 over the 900 due to the 880 having much narrower wheel base.
