I think they where a factory installed option. My Brother bought and sold one 10 years ago or so. The one he sold went for over $30K. I think that they all are pretty rare.

I just wondered if anybody ever settled the debate. Oliver claimed the first MFWD on the 1800 and 1900s,but Moline had them earlier. The claim was that Oliver factory installed them but the Molines were dealer installed. I don't know.

I have a picture here of ('39)M with MFWD. Not sure of the make(Coleman or??),or how long it has been on the tractor. It uses a drop box from the belt pulley to power a driveshaft to the front differential. But nonetheless, pretty cool.

Both, A G704 would've been the factory installed MFWD on a GVI. But with time, many have been switched around between models. Supposedly there were authorised instructions for cutting out the transmission housing to add the transfer case, but it would have been a job to get it just right. Not all the transmissions were machined for the transfercase, even on the later tractors.

good morning fred, that's a nice lineup of prairie gold you have there, are these at your place? the m-5 looks like it has had a few changes made for pulling? love the pipe pedestal seat  and whats that black tank looking set up on the left side?

That's an early Elwood axle, same company that made the axles for 86-series IH. They started in the late 1950's making axles for M's and newer, were IH aporoved FWA for 560's. Elwood was only a couple miles from the Joliet, Ill ARSENAL, they parted out lots of surplus 6x6 trucks and Elwood bought the frt axles all up. Later prior to selling axles to IH for 86-series Elwood bought new Dana axles.

Thanks Fred, I starting to think you was to busy. Still think that G1000 wheatland is my favorite. Thanks again. DP

(quoted from post at 09:30:05 02/24/18) Were those MFWDs factory or a dealer installed option?

The GvI with the Elwood is a add on the factory mfwd for it was called a G704. The first 100 hp plus farm tractor with mfwd was the G706 introduced in 1962. I have a 1964

I worked at a MM dealer from 64 to 68. And was around the dealership starting about 55. He sold quite a few 4x4's starting with GVI. Factory sent them to Elwood Il. To get converted. We picked them up at MM warehouse. My friend had a 560 IHC Diesel row Crop 4x4 1960. Came through our local IH dealer also. I'm in Southern Il. Next to the Skillet Fork river. It was thousands of acres of trees, being cleared at this time. These big 4x4 tractors pulled heavy Rome 1/4 " blade of set disks. Most of the ones we sold were L.P.

Ah,I see. They could be bought new that way,but they were converted by an outside vendor then?
