Tractor Hauler Starter

On my 2001 chevy 2500 with the duramax ive been having issues with the starter. I had the solenoid replaced twice and I'm still having issues, a couple weeks ago it started clunking and kicking out when I started my truck. I took it to a shop and they put a new solenoid on it and the first time I started it, it sounded great and after it grinds halfway through starting and the same thing happened the next time they replaced the solenoid. The solenoid kept have loose terminals was why they replaced them. Could the bearings be bad in the starter? Would that cause the grinding? the teeth on the ring gear had a couple nicks but weren't bad.

I had the starter on my 350 Camaro hanging, I took it off and shimmed it..no luck, took it off and shimmed it differently no luck...put a new solonoid on it ..no luck finally looked it over very carefully and discovered that the spacer at the end of the bendix was gone. Being totally fed up I went to Carquest and got a new starter $68 plus tax with core. End of problem, car started so much easier, less draw, spun quicker...in total I had the starters on and off 8 times, could have fixed it first time with a new one, also out the price of the solonoid and the shim packages...so naturally my advice to anyone with starter problems is put a new one on and be done with it..cheaper in the long run

You say it grinds half way through starting.

Are you saying the starter is spinning but the engine is not turning over?

If so, that sounds like a worn clutch in the drive. Replace the drive gear.

If this is a gear reduction starter, look all the gears and bearings/bushing over closely. If there is a problem with the reduction gears, a rebuilt starter will be the easy fix.

It keeps cranking while it's grinding, the starter was supposed to have been gone through ago when the first solenoid was put on but I didn't start having any issues with it grinding until I had to have that out on and it was clunking and kicking out was why I had it off the first time. Thanks for all the input so far!
