Distributor condensers

No. Whether 6v or 12v system, that condenser typically sees several hundred volts during running.

for the minor change in voltage, NO.. you are in no danger of arcing across the plates or burning through the insulator by changing from 6 to 12 volts.

it should not matter, as it is just a capasitor that is storing the spark when the points open.

What it really does is provide a path to keep coil current flowing so that it does not have so much of the coil energy blown away in an arc across the points.

Take my advice and keep the old coil, condenser and points in a safe place if you decide to replace the ones on there now. Why? Because new ones are junk.

The typical condenser in a battery powered points distributor coil ignition has a voltage withstand rating FAR ABOVE 6 OR 12 VOLTS so can work in EITHER a 6 or 12 volt system. Its a passive component sort of like an electron storage bank. If it's too big she may never fire, if its too small (or not even there) she can still fire but the points will burn premature,,,,,,,,,,,,if its a dead short no fire. Many cheap ones new out of the box are BAD grrrrrrrrrr.
