OT - Car's Rusty FWD Axle Shafts

Friend has a 2001 Acura Integra with 100k miles. Shop that normally does the oil changes said axles need replaced. Didn't explain why. No apparent noises or symptoms when driving. Took it to another shop for second opinion. Second place showed me extensive corrosion on axle shafts. Said they've seen it before, and that it's a significant risk for them to break as a result. Boots look just fine. Plan to keep the car another 5 years, at least. What would you do?

If the pitting is extensive and near through the tube, I would replace. (Rock Auto or other) if not too nasty I would wire brush to bare metal and put epoxy (two part real epoxy) paint on them. Jim

I had a big discussion with our " big deal" chevy dealer about brake rotators. They said that they were rusty and needed replacing. I asked the shop manager how the brake surface could be rusty. His answer was that the outside of the discs were rusty. Well DUH. The discs only had 96888 miles on them since they replaced them last. We don't deal with them any more.

I recently saw this happen to a car, well saw the aftermath, shaft was only maybe 3/4 to start with and when the scale and rust got to it enough that it was maybe 1/2 to 5/8 in a few sections with the assistance of a heavy foot I'm sure knowing the driver well it twisted off and beat around enough to take out the brake hose, abs wire and upper control arm was badly damaged

The things I learn here.
Never seen or even heard of an axle shaft rusting through, and I live in the rust belt.
Better safe than sorry, replace that axle...things break at the most inconvenient times and in the worst of places.
Don't ask me how I know.

Thanks again, guys. Sounds like replacement it is. As one of you commented, this one was a new one on me. Glad to have all you nice folks as a resource:)

If you look at yours and it has one of those rubber damper pucks clamped onto the shaft then that is probably where you will find the rust.

should have taken him out to the car lot and showed him all of his new cars have rusty rotors on them too.
