It is to get critters out of the mower. Great answers gentlemen. Still some got caught because of a natural reaction "Fight" "Flight" or "Freeze" Freeze is the killer.
 
Neat idea. I use to walk beside the haybine and catch little rabbits when I was a kid, seen many of them cut up.
 
Father in law had a cat that the mower hit and cut both front feet off. She survived on her own and managed to have two litters a year for a long time after that.
 
We had one got caught by the haybine. Lost a back leg and part of a front paw.
First thing she did when we let her out after recovery was catch a bird. She lived a long good life after the accident as well.
