I have a mf 65 that has been in the family since new but has been sitting for years after I got it running I found that the pto has an issue going into rpm when the engine is running. it goes into ground fine. I can put ion rpm with the engine off then start the engine and it will stay in. can anyone give me a little help in solving this problem. Thanks JohnS.

If you are experiencing gear grinding while trying to shift to engine rpm mode. You have clutch issues.

Your tractor has a 2-stage clutch and the second stage is not releasing. Could be as simple as it needs adjusted. Not so simple could be friction disc is stuck (rusted) to flywheel. Worse yet, clutch is coming apart and some stray parts are binding things up causing it to not release.

You might try hooking up a brush hog or whatever then starting with the PTO in gear and operating with the clutch down to see if the PTO still turns. If it does you won't hurt anything to try to load it to see if you can get the clutch to slip. It may just be lightly stuck and come loose with not much effort.

I bought a 65 diesel that caught on fire and sat for years til I rebuilt it. I tried to get the PTO clutch to break loose by running the baler, a rotary mower, all with no success. I had to split the tractor and replace the clutch discs. Get a manual as it will describe how to set up the two discs and you'll need to make some special tools from 1/4" all-thread to release the springs in the pressure plate. My first attempt at putting the two tractor halves together was not successful because the two discs were not aligned close enough. I took it back apart and measured the position with a T-gauge and a micrometer and it slipped together easily after that.
Long story short, plan on splitting your tractor and replace the clutch discs.

Plan on it, but don't take one example as every issue. I have unstuck several tractors by loading the clutch. I've also had several which would not unstick. It depends on how stuck it is. But i sure wouldn't tear into it without trying the easy way.
