Searching barn hardware/pulleys on Ebay - found the word "Steampunk" used in a lot of the descriptive titles. Googled the word and couldn't find any thing that made sense. Anyone ??

Steampunk is a term used to describe decorations or costumes made from turn of the century bits and pieces. Think copper and brass pipes, rivets, and Victorian era clothing. Tends to be mechanical themed.

You need to try again. On Bing it turns up hundreds of results. Make sure you use one word.

My take on it: Steam age equipment as used by modern day punks.

I must be a modern punk then! LOL

Bought an old goose neck medical light fixture on Ebay, said it was "steampunk".

I say it works very well bolted to the band saw!

Sprint has it. Some tallented people make all sorts of stuff out of brass and wire anything to make turn of the century looking mechanical stuff. Kinda you guys makeing a bull dozer out of roller chain and bolts etc.

In a nutshell its taking the Victorian, steam exposed mechanics theme(the steam in steampunk) combine that with modern ideas, like cars, robots...add some costumes for more real effect.... in an out of the box creative artistic way(the punk) half machine, half person (cyborg) is a popular way ....and there you have it. Or another way, expressing how modern day things would look if done in Victorian age., or if the folks then had to make todays gadgets.

ever see the movie (or old TV show) Wild Wild West... were they make/have very elaborate things with full mechanical movement....think that way now add a more modern machinery to make with the old steam and exposed linkage,

Here is my attempt at steam punk. Pipe fittings, gages, etc. Ron MN

If you ever saw the movie 20,000 leagues under the sea (James Mason). Master of the World (Vincent Price). The Time Machine. As Cory Schmidt said "Victorian" with lots of shiny brass rather than chrome. The movie "Dune", even the uniforms were Victorian. Often women dress more into it than the men when doing Cosplays with brass trimmed full over the bust corsets usually dark. Etc.
Elaborate and intricate clockwork overlay on and off clothing.

Ron,
I was gonna confess for you, that yer a steampunker. LOL

Was hoping you'd post that... so I didn't have to digging through my photo files. It's a great lamp. Big ol' thumbs up, greendude. :)

I don't claim to be a guru on "pop culture" but I don't see where any of the previous posters have got this quite right.

I'm gonna go a bit out on a limb, here, and GUESS you've never seen the "Wild Wild West" series, or the 1999 movie by the same name.

As I see it, "Steampunk" is a fantasy world based on the electrical/electronics world never having been discovered/developed, a world where ornate brass steam-powered Victorian mechanisms exist to fulfill every need and whim, just as our electronic "devices" do in our world.

Sellers of old "junque" have capitalized on this, and suddenly anything old is "steampunk".

And, for gosh sakes, if you are a God-fearing "steampunk virgin" DO NOT GOOGLE "steampunk grrrls"!
