Need recommendations - Jump Start

I have been considering buying one of those hi amp battery jump start packs and would like to hear from some of you that have experience with them. I've been looking at a 1000 amp (12V). They claim they will start up to a 7.0 liter diesel (I realize that could depend on a lot of things, temp, etc.). I did witness a farmer using one to help start my son's 9610 JD combine last fall which we were trying to jump start with two diesel pickups and not having much luck even after letting them both hooked up to the batteries for 15-20 minutes we were just getting a second or two of turn over. So along comes a neighbor and says "here, try this" so we hook up this little box with two short cables to the battery and walla, it cranked right up. I was amazed. From what I have seen, they are available in all sizes and made by a variety of manufacturers but when you get above 1000A the physical size grows somewhat and I would prefer to have something small to be able to carry in the pickup behind the seat, etc. It would probably used mostly on pickups and maybe small tractors. Would the 1000A be powerful enough to do the job? What are your experiences? Thanks.

I am using a Micro-start XP-10 it claims 600 amps... It has worked flawlessly on probably close to 100 starts it has took on all comers.

I sold one to a customer that has a Dodge diesel he don't drive it enoufh to keep the battery charged. After a few months his bats will be grave yard dead. He calls me he can not get the Micro to crank his truck I run over to his place install the Micro it burns the cable connection out in the micro  When I was playing with it and charging it before I let him have it I though the cables fit sloppy so I think the connections were bad from the get go.

From that point on when I use one on a diesel I hook up my battery jumpers and my micro start they all have fired to life. I think asking one to start a diesel with grave yard dead battery's are asking a little much with out some help from another jumper source. I jumped his diesel off last week my tow truck along would not do it I added a Micro to the other battery it fired off... Its fired off every gas engine I have installed it on.

They are handy as a pocket on a shirt but they do have there limits I guess you will find the limit when it goes up in smoke...

My son gave me a JNC660 for Christmas a couple years ago. Apparently it is made by Jump-N-Carry. We have jumped a few with dead batteries as well as many gas and diesels with low batteries and it has not failed to crank them all. Supposed to be 1700 amps peak & it isn't much heavier than the cheap ones but does cost more.

I haven't tried one yet, guess I've been doubtful, but sounds like there must be something to them.

But 1000 amps!

That's a lot of power! They must have some super heavy duty alligator clamps.

Would think even with the best connection a clamp could get, with that kind of amperage it would just blow
the metal away where it makes contact!

I have used this for years. I don't keep batteries in my magneto tractors and use it for all starts. My battery froze last year on my diesel loader tractor and it started all winter todo chores. I didn't buy a new battery until late spring. I was going to buy the nest bigger but it weighs more than I can carry around anymore. I had the smaller blue one before that the battery went bad. I put a new battery in it this fall so I have two now. With two I can hit something with 24 volts if needed. I have not need it yet though.

!

I never thought much of those little plastic box boosters but I've seen one work. My brother has one and they used it to boost start the Perkins diesel in a 1085 tractor after the batteries got low due to excessive cranking. We had run it out of fuel. The booster seemed to work ok.

The cables are like 10 ga wire the clamps are plastic  I dunno how they work but they do :) I have tried them even without a battery in the car it started right up...

I need to extend my cables... I usually do about 15 starts before I recharge it even then I recharge it not because it gets low just so its ready when I need it. All my motorcycle buds tote on on there bike... I have a few small gas engines that are electric start that don't have a battery I just jump them off with the micro and use them...

JNC is rated as the best carry jump pack by the pro's its a good one... If I were gonna buy of that style JNC would be the one I just got tired of having to replacing jump packs every couple years...
I never owned a JNC tho just the off the wall cheap jump pac's that were a waist of money...

Car dealership used 1500's. I bought 1 to keep in the f450 to start this darn v10. It works. Wouldn't want anything less for HD work.

I bought a 4000 amp one, it struggles a bit but will light off a 6 L sized diesel with bad cells/ dead batteries at -25 c.

In similar temps on gas v-8?s there isn?t a hint of struggle.

Anything with a low but not failed battery doesn?t seem to challenge it.

If you buy a desent one you will love it. I have 2, one on each farm and have never used jumper cables since. They start everything I got from semi to combine and use one to run product pump for sprayer fill in spring.

I don't remember the brand of my fist one I had but it lasted over 10 years. The one I replaced it with is a Stanley and have had it four years. In the winter I keep mine in side where it's warm when not in use.

1000 amp rating is meaningless and misleading. Jump starter pack rated a 1000 "peak" amps is often really rated at around 250 cold-cranking-amps. I suggest you only buy something that gives real specs - like the size of the battery and power in CA or CCA. Likely something rated over 2000 "peak" amps. E.g., a JNC660 is rated 1700 amps and its real rating is 425 cranking amps which is as low as you want to go.

I have a Duracell Powerepack 600 with no misleading hyped "peak" ratings. Has a 27 amp-hour battery and I have tested it at 500 cranking amps. I suppose with the more usual marketing BS, it would be called a "4000 amp" pack.

JNC 12/24 is a good one.. Have 2 of them. ONe in shop, one on truck. Will start trucks with 3 dead batteries. Kinda pricey.

Those little packs work because most modern engines start instantly. The draw is so quick, and the wires are so short, that they can get away with it.

You WILL burn one of these things up on something that needs to crank for a long period of time. Usually the solder in the connectors melt first before the lithium battery cells get hot and catch fire.

Smaller ones might start a lawnmower on a warm day. You have to have a mighty big one to start today"s larger engines. Translate $$$. I keep a small one around to run my automotive spotlight. Otherwise it is booster cables off a running machine with a good battery and alternator.

If you want to get real serious about a jump starter take a look at Noco jump starters. They have ones that will start anything you have (10+ liter diesel engines). They are not cheap $300.00 - $2,800.00 depending on model. There are several other brands that are like Noco.

Just keep an extra 1000 amp battery charged for jump starting. For what the starting units cost you could buy a new 1000 CCA battery every 3 years for next 20 years.

i've got an older sears diehard power pack booster. worked but was odd to use. only would let you have about 40 secondds to use it including running from the front of the car and get to the drivers seat and if it didn't start in the 40 seconds you had to wait 60 seconds

it had a sealed lead acid battery in it but got to the point it wouldn't start anything.

have a stanley max now. has worked much better but seems like its not holding charge very long. its got a cigarette lighter plug and 1 or 2 USB ports as well so it has been used more for powering stuff than jumping. pretty handy. it think it has a work light and mini air compressor in it too but i've never used the compressor.
