morning chores took a little longer

I scrape the holding pen after milking is done, so its clean for night chores. I got in the L455 skid steer, hit the glow plugs, and when i turned the key to start, someone lit off a 12 gauge behind me. Ohhhh wait, it was the battery exploding. first time in my 68 years, most of which have involved tractors, trucks, skid steers, etc, for that to happen. the cows jumped, but most of them were eating at the bunk, so they didn't get to running. it blew the whole top off a 3ET battery. i had to switch to the backup skid steer to finish chores.
guess I'll be heading for another battery tomorrow. wonder if I get credit for the core?

That happened to me with a Miller Welder a few years ago. I filled it with gas, started it to make sure everything was ok. Drove to the job site and got set up and tried to start the welder and the battery exploded. This was in a chemical plant with strict rules. I spent the rest of the day being questioned like a criminal til the boss came and rescued me. Ellis

Thirty-five years ago was working for this farmer with a 4020 JD pulling a feed wagon. Was going to the next farm on the road when bang, sounded like under my right foot. The farmer showed up later and I told him that something went bang on that tractor. He said shut it off, wouldn't start.

I've never had one blow when I was near, had one blow in a pickup over night tho. Even after I washed it down several times with baking soda and some stuff I got at napa, the truck still rusted.

I have had two do that over the years. It usually a bad internal connection that arcs when put under a heavy load. That lights the hydrogen and you go BOOM!!!! I would wash the skid steer ASAP as that acid will eat things pretty quickly.

You should still be able to get core credit for the exploded battery because it's mostly the lead that is recycled. You can always call the store ahead of time to be sure.

Be careful removing and transporting the old battery as the sulfuric acid can hurt your skin, nose and eyes. After the old battery is removed I would hose down the area around the battery ASAP to reduce acid damage to the machine.

I've also had the pleasure of a 4020 battery blowing it's top under the battery cover beneath my foot.

Kinda STARTLING, ain't it!

I turned the key to start my 74 ford pickup one day and Blam !!! What the heck ? Turned the key again truck started right up .The next day in the daylight I lifted the hood and found the top of the battery had blown off, and put some holes in the rad too. Started on the blown up battery several times.

Had battery explode on a Jeep pick-up years ago. Sure got my attention. Battery acid all over wiring. Major expence. But that Jeep design was a major disaster from the start to finish.

Heard one blow in a school bus that had just let the kids off at school. Blew the fender off.
Had one blow just under my hand about 20 years ago. Thought my hand was gone till I looked and it was still there. Ran my hand under cold water a long time. I hung up the coat I was wearing and in 2 weeks it was about eaten away.

Thanks for the posts. Didn't even know this kind of thing happened.

The worst I've ever had happen was that a piece of bare copper (seems like it was small tubing?) shorted across the battery of my '76 F150. It was the mid-80's and I just happened to be passing by where I worked; Randolph AFB Fire Dept. Pulled in and the extinguisher maintenance guy helped me get things up and running again. Talk about lucky!

Take some pictures for us and your records!!! Have seen several blown ones at the battery warehouse for Interstate Batteries. BLAM!!! Baking soda will help and give it a spray of motor oil. You might slow the rust down. Also check NAPA. They have something special to neutralize metal when you pickle it. Some other chemical possess. Hydrogen is one nasty B of a gas. Take a look at these. Two crazy people.

Couple of photos of the net. The ones I saw looked like the black one.
