Cleaning needle and seat

Seems I read on here different ways to clean needle seat. I'm working on an old Tractor that needle isn't holding on. It's been sitting a long time. Needle and seat look ok. Think maybe a little polishing would get it working.

i have polished a few using a dremel tool, q tips and toothpaste. cut the q tip in half and chuck it up in the dremel. you could use rubbing
compound or polishing compound too, but tooth paste is far less aggresive.

if its a rubber tip needle you can gently tap the needle into the seat to get a dimple on it. be gentle!!!

(quoted from post at 09:52:15 01/30/18) 0000 steel wool, you can twist it into a cone and use it to polish the seat.

Are lap the seat with a lead pencil... Why I use a lead pencil I don't have a wood dowel should get one tho... Make sure the seat is TIGHT in the base of the carb. A screwdriver is not the right tool make one out of flat stock a old file it needs to be wide enoufh to get a good grip on the seat.. Use a adjustable wrench on the tool to get it TIGHT.

I don't buy into hitting a seat to set it..... Clean and deburr it life will be good...

If the needle is all steel, inspect it closely. If there is a groove worn around it, might as well just replace it along with the seat and be done.

Widdle a piece of pine from a 2x4 that will fit in the seat and spin it by hand. Usually polishes it good enough.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I have plenty to try. I also read to use a skewer stick. I would buy a kit but right now I am just trying to get it running as we know no history on the engine. We stuck a borescope in the cylinders and can still see fresh hone marks however it doesn't have much compression. It seems to be getting better after putting oil in the cylinders
