Just read where an 8.2 earthquake in the gulf of Alaska sparked a tsunami warning on the entire west coast. Fake News??

I picked it up in the NYPost (not Times). Had responses from several areas including Hawaii where nobody is worried about it. Downgraded to 7.9 after initial 8,2 posting.

There is a direct correlation between earthquakes and tsunamis. However, it is not possible to predict whether any given coastal or oceanic earthquake will generate a tsunami, because you can't easily look under the ocean to see if a giant hunk of rock broke off the continental shelf.

Why not? Somebody accused the meteor that exploded over Michigan last week of being "fake news". I wonder when people will quit making such absolute fools of themselves by making that claim about every story that doesn't fit their world view?

It's the law of averages, if you claim all news is fake you'll be right most of the time. Likely on a higher average than when I try to think.

Hadn't seen that, but Richter scale is logarithmic, so that .3 drop is 3 TIMES less (an 8 is ten times the power of a 7, which is ten times the power of a 6, etc.)

Quake that strong could well trigger one. Could be a pretty impressive one at that, depending on just how the earth (ocean bottom) shifted. Better Send out a warning than not. Can always retract warning later. Wave won't be noticed much in the open ocean, but when it starts to come up on the shores it can rise dramatically.

A person can come out looking pretty stupid claiming that something that actually, factually happened in nature was "fake". Kinda like when a former member here claimed on this forum on the world wide web that Hurricane Harvey was "fake". All credibility goes right out the window when people start throwing that kind of claim around.
